So the brief story on Rada's and Vicky's is that Rada's was originally owned by a Russian woman named Rada. But she had to return home to family, so she sold the business to Vicky's. They were in two separate locations in Ft. Street Mall but combined after a while to save on rent. That's why they are both together. The original Rada's pirosckis were, IMO, a lot better, but amazing that it's still there! I think at one time, Rada's was also at Ala Moana next to Lyn's Deli.

Oh, that explains a lot! My mom used to rave about those pirosckis when she worked downtown (decades ago). Then one day recently she bought some for us, and I wondered what the fuss was about. Even she was disappointed, but now I can tell her why it wasn't as good as she remembered.

So if someone can look deeper, there was one in Aina Haina in the early 80's right next to foodland. I seriously believe it is the same shop but I was like 10 years old back then.

So these baked meat-filled buns have many different names. I know them as Beirock due to the Volga Germans and Mennonites that settled in the Reedley area of California. But they are also called Runza, Pirog, Pirogies, Pirok, Krautbuger, or even Kraut Pirok. Traditionally they have cabbage, sour kraut, ground beef, and salt and pepper to taste wrapped in a dough and baked.

You might want to avoid putting anything down or sitting on anything in dt esp on ft st mall area. I used to work in 1132 bishop where you were reviewing radas and early in the morning they were hosing down urine and putting kitty litter on the number 2 left by the homeless. The spam musubi at JoJo's couple shops up from ft Street Cafe is my favorite in dt.

So pirozhki has a lot of different spellings because there are different regional versions of it. So you will find all different versions of how it's spelled based on the region it is coming from, along with slightly different recipes and preparations. They exist in quite a few regions across the world, Greece, Serbia, Latvia, Armenia, Finland, Iran, Uzbekistan, even Japan and Mongolia to name a few.

And it is likely pronounced almost the same in most regions. For example, my gma's name was Svarz, and it is pronounced the same as Schwartz, and Swartz, Swarts.
