Cool facts: Otis Redding was sitting in Sausalito when he wrote " sitting on the dock of the bay" and Journey's " Lights" was inspired by the view from Sausalito.

@@Will-ib2js I don't think he was writing about Monterey Bay......but he did perform at the Monterey Pop Festival a few weeks earlier.....everything I read states that he was on a houseboat in Sausalito, writing part of the song (Steve Cropper wrote most of it, and was a prolific writer for Otis...he also played guitar on the track) and listening to the waves, and seagulls, and "watching the ships roll in" and taking it all in....if you listen closely to the song, those sounds were incorporated into the song, as Otis had requested.....I sure wish he didn't get on that plane....the weather was horrific, and they were advised not to fly, but it is what it is.....great man, great legacy, and he accomplished all of that by 26...RIP The Big O

First, welcome to the Bay Area. I’ve been here for over 35 years and have always known about the hidden gems here. I ride my bike from Oakland to Sausalito and back twice weekly-56 miles round trip. This place never fails to amaze me! Also, check out the beautiful homes in the Oakland Hills with panoramic views of the bay and San Francisco - I know because that’s where I live. The bay is vibrate and diverse (not only culturally but by race and geography). Sonoma is another hidden gem along with Napa. And finally, dude you are just three hours drive from Lake Tahoe where there is some of the best snow skiing in the world. Now, if you want to get fit and see the Bay Area by bike....hit me back as there is a large contingent of cyclist here. Happy you are here - proud Oakland resident.

(Sausalito resident story related to Sausalito and Otis Redding) My best friend was a sophisticated black Persian cat named Otis who ruled all the other cats and raccoons in the under ground, beneath the dock, pipeline highways, of the houseboat community on Issaquah Dock in the seaside Mediterranean village of Sausalito, Ca. I inherited him (or he inherited me) from a neighbor, an elderly woman who died, and was a friend of Otis Redding, a very famous singer and king of soul in the 1960s, who was with him on the docks in Sausalito, Ca when he wrote the song "Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay". Otis Redding died in an airplane crash in the 1960s on his way to a scheduled performance. Otis Redding kzitem.info/news/bejne/04qM0KJ4qGtniJw Sausalito kzitem.info/news/bejne/141urYxsjImQZXY kzitem.info/news/bejne/0ouXqXt4rqyXiZg kzitem.info/news/bejne/t4WMuo2ZsWd4lZg Apparently years later, after Otis Reddings death, she got a black Persian cat and named him Otis after her friend Otis Redding, that I inherited when she died. Although, I am not sure if I inherited Otis or he choose me, as he would come to visit me many times before she died. I loved Otis (the cat) so much that I built all kinds of unique things for him. Custom hideouts, lairs, beds, toys and more. He would even assist/watch me when I put my telescope on the top of the houseboat in the midnight hours trying to get images of the moon, planet's, etc. He was a great friend! Sometimes like a faithful dog, he would walk with me down the dock. Not many cats like that, he was extraordinary! He was constantly licking himself to get rid of the enormous amount of hair on his body. He would barf hair balls so much that I started to help him by removing enormous amounts of hair from him, first brushing which was useless and finally pulling it out. He would come by and remind me of his hair removal appointment every other day. I would remove his hair outside on the upper deck of the houseboat, there was so much hair to remove that when I got it off of him and tossed it into the air, it would stick on my neighbors houseboats across the channel on the dock across from me, and it was accumulating so much on those other house boats that I had to try something else before it was discovered by angry houseboat owners. Some of his hair is probably till sticking to the sides of those houseboats till this day hah! Eventually, I had to bring him to the vet because he was being blocked, could not pee, hoping to cure him, the vet had to stick a thin rotor tube up into his you know what to clear him and wanted to perform surgery on him, cutting open his stomach to remove the hair, I refused! The cure for Otis was to radically change his diet, stop feeding him dry food. From that point on, Otis only ate what I ate. He would only eat fresh bay scallops, fresh Dungeness crab when available and bottled water, hah! Whose running who here I thought! I discovered that Otis secretly had others who took care of him, two-timing me! He was indeed a sophisticated cat! One thing i discovered about cats is that they lie! I miss Otis very much who died of cancer. I was informed by a friend who inherited him from me as I was working on a contract far away from home, I was way beyond sad.

I love this! We had our wedding reception in Sausalito so I can vouch for how nice it is. And black people living well and exploring, love to see it. Plus he shows how important/helpful it is to talk with people and network. Get to know the restaurant owners, get to know the captain of the boat, get to know the bartender or owner. These relationships will help you down the line and if you ever have friends or family looking for something to do, you’ll be the ultimate plug. Aside from that, hella funny how half of the video was this dude stunting though lol.

Found your page and glad I did. One of the best videos. I worked in San Francisco most of my life but Sausalito was my favorite place to shop and dine. My goal in life was always to purchase a house in Sausalito. 10 years ago it was not affordable and now I would need millions. Very pricy but the privacy, views and security is on point. You will stand out if you know what I mean. You can walk and get everything you need within one mile. And if its not happening go across the bay. It always had been an older crowd for all the events. Crime is really low- if any. A very tight knit community. Streets are real narrow. Parking is an headache if you drive due to most of the streets are for residence only. If you like the finer things-this is a place for you.

Sausalito is known for its wonderful views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge as well as for its historic Richardson Bay houseboat community, which was built after WWII by artists and other free spirits. The city hosts the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' functioning hydraulic model of the Bay Area

Since you're in the Bay how about doing a video on the Silicon Valley? The who's who of technology is in this region and it is quite a site to behold. I know you could do a wonderful job. I enjoy showing out-of-towners who visit what the Tech Community is. Makes for many Photo-Ops and video at your favorite tech companies.

Wow, I was born in Oakland and never even knew about this place. We definitely need more black creators with beautiful content like this. Excellent video.

Love this video, really well done! I actually live in the Bay area and love Sausalito. I used to take my macaw there with me and took pictures of tourists with her for free. The reason the best weather is in October is because when it's really hot inland during the summer, it draws the fog into the bay so it's really cold and windy. Go 10 miles inland and it's 90 degrees while Sausalito is in the 50's!

Just came back from Sausalito CA and this place is amazing! Weather was great, a tad cool but coming from Florida it was a nice change of pace (no humidity). The views were spectacular, and Casa Madrona is worth every penny. Big thanks to the hotel staff for making us feel at home. Pics won't do this place justice, definitely a "must do" if you are ever in the bay area. Kudos on this video this really encapsulate the Sausalito vibe....

SAUSALITO was famous honeymoon spot on the 1980s. Glad u found it. Funny, the Hamptons used to be a black farming town. And yes, the land was confiscated.

Californians know it it gorgeous. That's why it is a "hidden" gem. Northern California is full of sleepy little beach towns.

Sausalito is much closer to San Francisco than Oakland. It’s a half hour from Berkeley driving fast with no traffic. I would say that Sausalito is at least 45 minutes away from Oakland. I used to commute.
