I love this about Cambridge Audio gear, I've got an A5 Integrated amplifier circa 2005 and it seems they've been doing this for quite some time now. Question...I thought a MC preamp would output a signal equivalent to the level of a Magnetic preamp. Why is youre's low level?..or am I wrong. (probably).
@scharkalvin
5 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why the MC sounds lower in volume than the MM if you had set your preamp to the correct input level. It seems that your preamp just might not be handling the MC cartridge correctly, or doesn't have enough gain. If the input compensation on the preamp is correct, I'd think that its output to the amplifier should be the same for either a MM or MC type. Or is the problem that the MC has less dynamic range than the MM? BTW, from what I understand the MM type cartridges have more mass attached to the stylus than the MC types, which in theory gives the MC better high frequency response. I've always liked the ADC cartridges with their "induced magnet" system. They were technically a MM type, but used a PM to "induce" a magnetic field into a light weight bit of iron that moved between the fixed pickup coils. This gave them a moving mass closer to the MC type, but with an output close to a true MM type.
@musicman8270
5 жыл бұрын
Moving coil has a lower output, simple as that. The price of being more resolving and why you need a preamp with coil capability. Moving coil is seen as having better sound and being more upscale.

I use it it with a Technics SL-5100 with Nagaoka MP-150 cartridge and it has been great. The internal power supply is very well isolated and separated from the audio circuitry so there isn't any unwanted noise from electrical interference. Edit: Just a side note about alignment. It works when you align from the top but the best results come from aligning based on the position of the cantilever as it isn't always perfectly aligned with the body of the cartridge.

It would had been nice to hear the noise just to get an idea what it really sounded like. To me it just look like normal surface noise, plus it seems to start even before the needle drops cause it's not total flat before this. So i guess Techmoan just made this one up as an excuse to get some new stuff and make a new video because usually you can hear if it's an electrical kind of noise or mechanical and then you don't replace two things at one you would just replace one thing and see if the noise is gone and if not you replace the second thing.

I was looking at getting a preamp for my MM carts, I will have to look harder now I notice that your CA only supports 3-5mV input.. your cart is 3.5mV so it's ok for that but I would like something that has a wider range of input levels. I would mostly use it for archiving/recording purposes but I also DJ and was thinking of 'upgrading' my DJ mixer phono preamps to dedicated phono preamps for higher quality audio (and more annoying setup procedure), and a lot of DJ carts are designed to be loud, 5-9.5mV.. so I will have to pay attention.

Does the Alva Duo match input capacitance automatically with the cartridge by using some kind of sensing mechanism or is it a static input capacitance? I didn't see any switches for that. My SPL Phonos needs to be switched manually to the right capacitance/impedance, luckily it's operated on the front by using heavy duty mechanical rotary switches instead of those flimsy/delicate DIP switches. Looks a bit like an ugly old school sine wave generator bcos of the interface haha Despite looking ugly, it's very easy to operate and robust; other manufacturers can learn from that.

Howdy! Being from the US, I am curious about how you connect all of the power cables to the wall. I use a 12-outlet surge suppressor with coax and RJ-45 plugs that is 'supposed' to protect surges for my router and AV gadgets. I have a UPS for my desktop and monitors. I use foot-long M-F 3 prong cable extensions if I need to plug in several items with large 'wall warts' into closely spaced outlets (such as for my several external hard drives and their adapters). Under my desk I have a 'rack mount' style 9-outlet power strip with switches to remotely turn things on and off. Do you use things like this in your AV or studio setup? I can imagine that with the higher voltage in the UK these things would be much larger than what we have here in the US. It might make for a cool video to show those of us using 110v components what is used in the UK with larger 220v power adapters. Thanks in advance! (I've got a TrippLite TLP1208SAT for the router / AV stuff, the UPS is a CyberPower CP1000AVRLCD, and the rack - power strip is a Technical Pro PS9U. I added the names of what I use so you could look up what I use to see them, not that I am saying they are the best or anything like that.)

I bought the Cambridge audio solo pre amp has I don’t have a mc set up.Dont see the point of spending more for something I don’t have.Anway after a while I bought a trichord Dino 3 preamp.The solo is a great little preamp though.

I'm going to be swapping the cartridge on my vintage Onkyo 1030F from an AT-15S to an AT100E (my first time doing this), and I also have a Cambridge Alva Duo on the way. This video was a nice surprise when it popped up in search.

This is actually the reason most high end MC turntables are belt driven. The amount of gain thats applied to their signal means that you will almost always hear motor noise with a direct drive setup. You simply cannot insulate the platter from the motor enough. My own personal preference is belt drive, MM cartrage, best quality stylus i can afford (currently using an at95e cart with an LPGear at95MR micro-ridge stylus now, and personally im absolutely blown away)

I found the Cambridge Audio Duo to be quite noisey. I compared it to my older NAD PP4 which I use for ripping my vinyl albums, and it was less noisy. I really had thought the Cambridge would bury my NAD...

"Just attach the correctly colored wire to the correct input on the back-- very simple, can't get that wrong." Yes I can. I'm colorblind! (As is 4.4% of the population, BTW). Matching colored wires in the bane of my existence as a techie. (Ethernet cables are the worst!)

Hello - I presently own a Denon DP-37F Turntable and I am going to be installing a New Cartridge on the turntable. I just finished watching your video on youtube and it was very helpful! I would like to buy a New Denon Labelled head shell just like the one that you have purchased. It would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me where I can purchase one. I live in Canada. Thank You, Frank

Putting a phono preamp on top of other components is not a good idea. High gain circuitry are sensitiv to emi and a power amps specially tend to have a big transformer.

that's what i thought too but if he bought a new cartridge and preamp because of a faint noise that only he noticed, i assume he would have noticed any hum or other unwanted noise introduced by putting the preamp on top of the power amp. but if he is happy with the setup as it is now and does not notice anything unpleasant that probably means the preamp is properly shielded and being close to that big transformer is not an issue

@@KenjiTech I really couldn't care if he is happy or not, just stating some facts and injecting some common sense. His initial problem could very well be his carelessness in placing the preamp. Off course wouldn't be much of a video showing him just moving his pro-ject around. :)

When your significant other sees a fancy little box.. a fancy ring sized box?? Nope.. a moving magnet cartridge.

I don't know how it is in the UK, but if you can find it, please check the Nagaoka MP-110. Check this video where is it compared to the Goldring. kzitem.info/news/bejne/ppVvnpqBiqamm6g Pricewise and performance wise, it really stands out even on a normal system, I have it on an Audio technica LP-120 with an old Sony Amp (integrated phono stage), nothing too fancy and it sounds great. Though I suppose now you can't return the Goldring so might as well enjoy it.

Demon DP-47 midrange? In Australia, they try to sell them for about $800 when they’re in pieces.

I really wanted to love Cambridge Audio equipment but I have just opened remote control of my 651A and noticed two metal slabs just to make the remote heavier. Shame... Good video though. Thank you.

Anyone else curious if the MC cartridge with the new pre-amp still has the noise? Two variables in the system changed, so the OCD in me would test the old stylus with the new pre-amp to hear if it solved the low volume level problem and the noise.

Hi pmailkeey. Thanks for your response. Certainly an interesting debate and there's plenty of food for thought in your arguments. Our comments are out there in the public domain for anyone that's interested to judge and make their own minds up. Just one point I would like to clarify if I may, please; stylus armatures are almost without exception mounted to the body on a compliant flexible bung (usually a polymer) which makes the flexible coupling the armature moves on. As an engineer you will be very aware that the flexibility of materials varies with their temperature (heat steel to red hot, for instance, and it's very malleable or even plastics in hot water!) and this is where the relationship between ambient temperature and a pick-up cartridges compliance becomes important. Your comment about "colder temps would make (the) record harder/more durable" actually confirms the above scenario. Also as we both now agree and accept this as basic physics wouldn't you expect a "harder" (low temperature) record to wear faster than a "softer" (room temp) record as it would be more "brittle" and less able to flex against unwanted stylus torsion; i.e. fold a flexible vinyl L.P. against your knee and it'll flex by a considerable amount then bounce back into shape. In contrast the same exercise with a "harder" and much more rigid shellac 78 R.P.M record will result in a cracked / shattered record. I know this analogy doesn't compare like with like but I think it's a reasonable way to empirically illustrate my premise. Finally, and I apologise in advance for my stupidity, but I really don't understand your comment about "non-magnetic" speakers and driving a light bulb with my amplifier. My main concern with this is that driving an a.c. current through the filament of a light bulb would, without a doubt, generate a magnetic field - not much but you can't deny it's presence. I'm not an engineer but, from memory and school physics, I seem to remember that Michael Faraday confirmed that passing an alternating current through a wire (in this case an audio signal and bulb filament) induced an associated magnetic field. So no doubt I'm missing your point here but I can't imagine, under any circumstances, an electrical transducer that does not have an associated magnetic field. I suspect that by a "non-magnetic" speaker you mean a device that doesn't operate mechanically under Flemings Left Hand Rule. The nearest real-world example I can think of a "non-magnetic" speaker would be a plasma gas tweeter which uses ionised ambient air in lieu of a traditional cone but even these rely on electro-mechanical ("magneto-electro") devices to regulate the gas "signal" Thank you once again for a stimulating and thoughtful debate; This is what the internet should be all about; healthy intellectual stimulus and discussion; I get thoroughly dismayed at some of the ignorant and basically rude commentary that's so common on KZitem. For me it isn't even a matter of "who's wrong or who's right"; it's a wise man that accepts there are no definitives in this life and most things boil down to shades of gray. Thanks once again for your very prompt and illuminating response to my earlier post! :0)

Hi , I have a 1978 model of Gerrard 6 record changer which my late grandfather bought from London during one of his holiday there. This turntable uses a ceramic cartridge and it's mechanics still work perfectly well. Kindly reccommend the best brand of phino preamp for this turntable's ceramic cartrudge.
