Very interesting, Rev. Yamada clearly understands his sect well. From a traditional Hongwanji-ha perspective, I personally find that the Otani-ha perspective is no longer compatible with Shinran's teachings, I think it is great to encourage dialogue with all schools and look past differences. A lot of Shin Buddhists do not have education about general Buddhism or Mahayana outside of their own sect, so it would be great to foster this more.

I agree entirely! I think that the current Otani-ha understanding has deviated from Shinran Shonin's teachings, but it is nontheless good to dialogue.

amazing lecture. so cool to hear more about this. Interesting to hear that Mori backed the Hongan-ji against Nobunaga, and really cool to see that battle map.

Excellent stuff! There was a question about whether anyone is working to bring Buddhists together. In Hawaii the decades-old Hawaii Association of International Buddhists (HAIB) sponsors a (usually) annual Dharmachakra Festival in the fall and sometimes events during the year to connect Buddhists of all ethnicities, schools, and sects, with diverse if variable participation. The even older Hawaii Buddhist Council, an organization of bishops of Japanese Buddhist denominations, sponsors an annual Bodhi Day service. Honpa (Nishi) and Higashi Hongwanji clergy have been active in both efforts.
