Since I see a lot of people commenting about this, I figured I'd explain a bit further when I talked about 'old magic' vs 'new magic'. The reason why I said it would be the reverse is my own view on the concept of the evolution of magic. In other fantasy stories I've read, wands/staffs/tomes are used as a conduit for their magic because they can't control it on their own. The evolution of magic would then be to use the magic without those items restricting you; as though they served as a training wheel. However, this show does the opposite where using your hands is seen as more restrictive than using a wand. People seem to think I'm talking about something else (?), so I just wanted to clarify.
@realmoftheouroboros8313

I think you missing a point of this "new" magic it is not only lack of body movement but also a lack of reagant and time. with is build in the wands likely the reagant are fabricated in the focus. This gives the drawback a wand will run out with use, while the old magic keeps you going aslong as you got the reagants and your own energy.

Even Disney of all things recognize the dangers of magic. They own Kingdom Hearts. Halloweentown TV movie series and Decendents of all things even gave us better stakes and resolutions than this show did. And some of these were made to appeal to preteen children. Some same age as the characters in this show. An example: the headmistress in The college of Halloweentown basically admitted a beginners magic class went terribly wrong and half the freshmen class had to be sent back home as teacups permanently. They got turned into Chip from beauty and the beast permanently. They addressed this as part of the lore of Halloweentown, There was powerful spells that Grandma Aggie knew about with her dark past that took 4 movies to more or less resolve. Aggie can be a troublemaker with magic.

The funny thing is we could use this in our advantage to make a good story if we tweaked the message... The poison killing the students is a lie, and wouldve worn off by the time the students completed class. The purpose of the lie was to teach them to perform under pressure, and to start the process of making them understand that death is just that simple. Also critical thinking skills and planning. All these individual pieces work together to make the core lesson of that class. Then to say that the vows to the academy are metaphorical. To study and do your best or risk breaking the vows as a Guardian is the same as a real death, maybe not of the physical kind but if you made a vow to protect the innocent and people expected you to protect the innocent and you break that vow.... Its the death of your Guardian 'self' and therefore the Academy by extension. But these nutty writers wouldnt know how to write a compelling story if it kicked them into plot holes while yelling "this is sparta!"

The series might have had a chance of being slightly less awful if they didn’t try using a school for the setting of the story. The teachers don’t feel like mentors or role models, just a collection of adult children who couldn’t give two shits about the students. It’s even more apparent in the dungeon episode, where they treat throwing kids with barely any training into a death trap is normal and acceptable and anyone who thinks otherwise are the psychotic ones. It doesn’t feel like they are really trying to guide them, just find way to mock and torture them for their inexperience and naivety. Just awful characters and I don’t feel a single attachment towards any of them. And the fact the main character are students really limits a lot of the potential for the story since they need to stay confined within the school and starting town for the majority of the series. Maybe if the story took place in a guild or some kind of organization where it makes more sense to challenge them like this, the plot wouldn’t have been as god awful as it was.

@@JayRedGear I could understand why, but also it's just I've never liked bully characters regardless, no matter what. Maybe because they reflect a little too much on bullies I've had as a child? Not completely sure, but Snapdragon is way funnier than she is to be honest. She's just mean, and also, and an important lesson I've learned from anime, and when I say anime of course mean actual Japanese anime, is that you can fully empathize with someone situation and someone's issues, but also hate being around them. This was actually very freeing for me personally, because there's plenty of people in my actual life that drive me up the wall but yet I empathize with their situation but I have felt like I was obligated to be tolerant of them, simply because I was able to empathize with them. For example, there's a pretty autistic kid in a class I was going to for a while, and he was so darn annoying, and it made a really really hard for me to focus in class. I know he's autistic and all, but because he's autistic and the teacher's son, he was allowed to do whatever the frick he wanted to do, including but not limited to growing up to the whiteboard, drawing things, interrupting class to make some sort of weird dampan rampa reference, yell something, throw things occasionally, and just generally speaking disrupt class. It was very frustrating, it was very hard to be tolerant of him, and you know again, I understand he is autistic, and again I learned that it's totally okay for me to hate being around him but also can be totally sympathetic with them at the same time. I'm sure you can understand this situation, and also again, I understand he's autistic but to be honest, while yes he should have certain accommodations, I know there are very gentle parenting strategies to make sure your autistic children also behave well in class. I remember for example, and my language arts class many years ago, there was also an autistic kid who was Goofy and erratic as well as emotionally erratic, which was annoying at times, but we all were understanding and accommodated him nonetheless, but the difference is, his mother actually did things to help him behave well in class, and if you haven't guessed it already, yes I'm involved in the homeschooling community, which no is not literal schooling at home, but us going to friend's houses to have either their teacher mom or dad doing a class in their home, for example language arts was taught by The homeschool mom that was very studied in terms of English language arts, and that science class I mentioned before, she's a licensed science tutor. We've also had classes in places like the Liberty science center, museums, nature centers, etc, so in case you were curious, that's why I keep talking about people's moms being teachers, because that was something that would happen occasionally, and of course their kid would be in the class too, but anyway as I was saying, that one mom had a child with a similar severity of autism, and what did she do about it? She would allow things like fidgeting, and also we had a recess time afterwards and there were sensory stimulating things around the house, that we all engaged in, such as trampolines, and they had a big yard we can run around in. I remember one time after class, we all had a big water gun fight. So that being said, she was taking care of all of his sensory needs, to be honest I don't remember much about the fidget thing but I remember she did specific things to make sure he could be included in class but also behave in class. We would also do activities that were sensory processing friendly, like one time, we were learning about economics and the functions of a society, and we did it by pulling out all of the Legos and building a big Lego City on the table, each of us building a different establishment. We even were allowed to be creative and use things like paper to make miniature foods. I remember making a deli, and some of us would group up and start a business together, it was really fun and cool. Basically, the teacher made it very easy for him to get all the stimulation he needed, and I know other homeschool moms with autistic children would do things to make it easier for their child to sit still. He may have had a fidget toy, I know for sure he and his brother had special grippy things on their pencils, I don't know if that's supposed to be helpful or not, but also I think it was helpful that there was lots of engagement included, and also we had basically an hour and a half of playtime afterwards, sometimes longer sometimes shorter. We would sometimes also socialize before class, depending on how early other kids came, but basically, the mother did everything in her power to make sure his autistic needs were met, while he also got to sit nicely at the table so all of us equally can learn. On the other hand, this other student many years later in high school science class, was being extremely disruptive, and it was been understandable since she did tutoring all day and I happened to go specifically to those science classes that were twice a week, so he really didn't get the stimulation he needed, but still, especially nowadays, there's plenty of fidget toys available that definitely work for those who need to fidget. I don't recall him alsoever having any time that he was allowed to just be goofy and bounce off the walls outside of a class time, and either way, there are gentle ways to discipline even your autistic child to make sure they don't disrupt class for everyone else. He would literally scream and yell, by the way he was not developmentally disabled in the way you might be thinking, it was more that he was socially awkward more than anything, but again my other classmate years prior was also socially awkward but it was manageable largely due to his mother's great intervention to make sure he got everything he needed before and after class and often during class. Again, we had many multi-sensory experience learning activities, and we did do lab in high school, but like seriously, at least in public school as far as I know, most autistic high schoolers get to have things like fidget toys and such, and at home they get to exert plenty of that energy that often need to be released through multiple stimulating activities. Basically, in short, you can empathize with someone but also find them extremely annoying and frustrating to be around. By the way I'm not relating that classmate from language arts as being annoying, he was fine for the most part, he was occasionally annoying but we're also talking about a time where I have very low patients due to my developmental stage and being early adolescence put on top of that, but late high School, it's pretty hard to push me over like that in terms of patience, and I fully empathize with his situation but yet find him annoying. Like these characters in the show, the main characters I cannot relate with at all and they are freaking annoying as hell, but yet I empathize with them whenever they're bullied. I hate these characters but yet I can't hate them enough to see bad things happen to them if you know what I mean

The thing is, "All your vows are wrong" could have been played right, that Guardianship is supposed to be a duty you uphold, not something you get to pick and choose how you go about it, and that somehow the kids are all convinced that the Real Vow encapsulates what they really felt, except clearer. But uhhh yeah no they didn't get it to work. Such an easy fucking plot device to help build everyone's character by having them have vows that align or contradict or are polar opposites and so set up the stage for future conflict, but no, they use it to make fun of the kids for no real fucking reason.
@MajorSquiggles

What did the characters learn from it? Of course all of them gave the wrong vow because they were told to. If the goal was to teach them to sacrifice their own life why not just ask them to say that in the first place? Or better yet create what seem like life-threatening situations for the students and see who was willing to die for the cause. Or ask each student to sacrifice one of their most treasured belongings into the well. You can learn a lot about what each character values and what they're willing to sacrifice. What do they fear to lose and hope to gain? Absolutely none of that. It's just an excuse to humiliate the students and call them stupid for doing what they thought they had to.

So, the moral of the story is: Even in this world, homeschooling is the best way to go, right? Just like in reality, this school seems to prioritize shaming wrongthink and indoctrinating the student body. Just, why not add reckless endangerment of the student body to the list of sins? If it weren't for the bright and vibrant colors, I'd expect this academy to exist in a dystopian setting. At least in Harry Potter, the school was usually not able to be so easily painted as malicious, and it was often shown that the dangerous parts of the classes were well predicted ahead of time -- safeguards were taken to where except in rare cases, anything risky was done under professional supervision, and medical magic was so highly advanced that most severe and even critical injuries could be relatively easily restored, to even the point where *completely missing bones* can be entirely regenerated. Second year students had to transplant mandrakes, but "their cries won't kill you, they're not old enough", but were strong enough to make Neville faint due to his neglected hearing protection. The times we have seen accidents and danger occur, the faculty of Hogwarts were usually very quick to intervene when it was clear something was going wrong or a student was in danger. As cold as Professor Snape could be, if some student accidentally poisoned himself in his class, I've no doubt he would immediately spring into action either adminstering an antidote if one was on hand or could be quickly prepared, or worst case scenario, grabbing one of the bezoars that were confirmed to be stocked in Potions class, IIRC, as per Half-Blood Prince. The Defense against the Dark Arts class was one of the most iffy classes, but it was lampshaded often -- as bad teachers would be cycled in and out every year, and it was theorized that the position was actually cursed. Prone to frauds, malicious people, and folks who had too much to hide -- but it can only be assumed this was a case of Hogwarts' checks and failsafes being ruined by whatever influence had cursed the position, if true. Hagrid got into trouble when Draco Malfoy got hurt (no less due to his own arrogance) during a hippogryph riding event. The Triwizard Tournament however was a flagrant case of endangerment, but it was only open to later year students and IIRC, you had to consent to enter it -- and it was a massive scandal that Harry was entered into the tournament without his knowledge or consent as part of a long conspiracy to bring back the Dark Lord. If anything, Hogwarts' biggest sin was not taking seriously an evil plot brewing under their noses, despite all the warning alarms Harry was drawing attention to when he discovered these evil plots related around Voldemort, year after year. For the most part, Hogwarts was guilty of negligence, not malice or reckless endangerment. That said, it's inherently dangerous to have a school full of 11-17 years old all equipped with the tools needed to cast any variety of spells including ones that can start fires, blow holes in walls, magically pick locks, transform, completely paralyze, hurl people with great force, modify memories, and hang people upside down -- and that's not even counting actual dark magic, of which Harry himself was able to in his sixth year find out a spell that was able to cause life-threatening lacerations that cause permanent, incurable injuries (Sectumsempra). All things considered, there's already an inherent level of risk with any kind of a magic school like that. It's also concerning that the library has a 'restricted section' that has forbidden and dangerous materials which isn't well protected enough to stop Harry, with a few magical artifacts, from getting into unauthorized multiple times.

Honestly the teacher poisoning students it's kinda cool, but for like and advance exam and not brand-new studings at begginer levels. It could work as a kind of group tour walking around other clases and see these magicians take this important exam with them poisoned while working on a cure, you know a school is serious when that happens but use it on beginners feels just plain mean and unprofessional.

Poisoning your entire class reminds me off Nevernight, where Mia and the other students where poisoned before they even entered and had to figure out a antidote against it in class or they would have died. But the thing is: They attend the lessons to become assassins. The setting is more serious and through the books the students get tossed into other life threatening situation and a lot of them die the longer the story goes on. If this isn’t the case for HGP (which I doubt it will be) than it just really comes off as stupid to try to kill your whole class.

Coincidentally this show also has a very regressive view of women. All the introverted female characters eventually “come around” and turn extrovert. There’s nothing wrong with old magic but the blue girl is portrayed as lesser for using that. All the “good” female characters are stereotypically feminine by modern American standards, and have almost exactly the same personality. Plus it has so many ableist undertones, the teachers mock underperformers and call students “useless and stupid”, criticise them for their own personal vows, and the show regularly portrays only “one right way” of doing magic. TLDR: Misandrists don’t just hate men, they also hate women who don’t behave exactly like them. This show was written by mean girls.

I feel like that potion think should have been a more major part of the episode, but it sounds more like they just kinda make it seem like no big deal. Like, kids are potentially gonna die and it’s just “hehe, so random, right?” If it were me I’d have made Sage also be under the spell and just as shaken as everyone else. But then realizing that everyone is losing their cool and too freaked out to work she actually sums up the courage to figure out the cure and helps herself and some of her classmates. At least 1 jobber has to die just to show that this situation isn’t a joke, death IS a factor here. That would, in my mind, help build up Sage as a character more.

I guess the poisoned tea makes sense, because the teacher wanted to show the students that becoming a guardian is not a game. But the teacher should not have allowed Sage to work on the antidote, because she was not under the same pressure as the other students. But then Sage seeing the efforts of the other students realizes her old magic training makes her better at potions than the other students and demands another cup of the poisoned tea so she is allowed to help.

Nice summary. However, I would actually feel *very* stressed out if I was told that I had to quickly conjure up a magical cure on my first day of school to counteract an unknown magical poison - or all my classmates would die. Also: Weren't the vows also about "using my agility" and "always being curious" or something ? I doubt most people would get all of that correctly by accident, especially if agility isn't one of their main strengths or if they don't value their own curiosity very highly (compared to helping others, being dutiful, honorable or whatever).

If I had to guess the reason new magic uses staves and wands is because they are like tools. New magic is, for lack of a better word, scientific. So they created tools to use it in a controlled fashion. Old magic is more spiritual and basic. Sage is supposed to be the poor girl who is trapped under the rule of her conservative religious parents. New magic is the devil's work and we'll have none of that in this family! Basically it's meant to say "religion bad" without explicitly saying it.

The "Deans" represent the neopagan feminine triad, the triple-goddess or Maiden/Mother/Crone. The Norns in Norse mythology, the Fates in Classical mythology, the Morrigan in Irish neopaganism, for example. You see it foreshadowed in Lloyd Alexander's "Prydain" novels and throughout Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" where the Furies & the Fates are juxtaposed. It's not worthy of speculation -- the writers/animators just aren't being very creative. XD
