Wow, early start! Supposedly New Jersey is one of the places along the AT where bear are most common. The others are the Smokies and Shenandoah. So you may never see a bear on this trip. But at least you saw the scat, ha! I've seen bears backpacking and it is not as much fun as you would think. A little scary, actually. So maybe it's better not to see the bear for real. And I sure hope you get those new shoes before the Whites! Those mountains will tear up a brand new pair of shoes, so starting them with an old pair would really hurt your feet. Hope you have your bug spray as you go through all of that tall grass! Tick city! And so nice to see Nickels and PBJ and others in the tramily reappear in your video! That was super sweet of PBJ's mom.

You saw a bear backpacking? Were they wearing the pack on their back like we do?

Oh the ticks are out now for sure- the thought of them being on those chairs came to me, and then when you mentioned 4 of them- good God, yes beware! You should save those worn out shoes as a souvenir. Embracing the journey bro!🚴🏼♂️🧘🏼🌿🌱🙏

Sorry to hear your shoes may be delayed. Maybe you can contact the place you bought your current pair from in Georgia and have them ship some to you (they may still have your size in stock). Embrace the journey and Happy Trails Stick 🥾

You put those shoe inserts in at that last place. Maybe you could put two of them in each shoe to see if that would give more cushion to help with any kind of rocks or other issues until you can get your other shoes? Just a thought. May not be much help. Sorry you can't get your shoes sooner that's crazy.

Thru hikers are some of the dumbest on trail......certainly trail runners have their place in wet sections...they dry fast....but....they suck on rocks...where you need a stiff sole to keep the rocks from damaging you feet....proper footware would make Penn.. a dream section.

Hmmm… I started in boots but I think wearing them every day was not working out for me well. Maybe just for the rockiest part?

Did you know that some trail running shoes have rock plates that make them stiff? I believe the shoe Stick wears has rock plates.
@petergrant9259

@@suehinze1566 I know his Topo's had rock plates... but just looking at what's left of his shoes they are destroyed by now... they are not made of steel, but most likely plastic cracked into tiny pieces about now. A shoe is made up of an out sole, a mid sole, and their insoles... Topo's are very lightweight trail runners, meaning they can be very good on certain sections of the AT, yet PA rocks can destroy any good pair of Trail runners from all companies. PA is a shoe killer. I would not do PA except in my Merrell Moabs at the least.. they weigh twice what a Topo does, and have the Vibram sole and a thick mid sole. Poor Stick has a bigger problem...the supply chain... he is not going to be able to pick and choose a shoe size 14 anywhere... he has to order on line taking a chance on another brand ... and the best trail runners in size 14 are all sold out. Hope he gets lucky, but once he found the Topo's worked he should have ordered 2 more backup pair to finish his hike. A lot of hikers at least on REI are all complaining about the quality of their shoes going down this year...it's the corporate way to increase profit by cutting costs in manufacturing. Inflation is killing everyone.
@sticktheeagle

@@petergrant9259 I completely agree that I should have ordered more once I found out they worked. It just did not cross my mind then. Now, I have learned that lesson and will have a few extras lying around waiting for the next big hike.

@@sticktheeagleI won’t say I told you so in the vlog you released after you got new shoes (I think it was that one; you can review those comments if you’re curious but of course that’s all history now) as this model is an improved version of the Topo Ultraventure Pro model that has been discontinued. The Traverse was released in Oct ‘23 so this is its first model year. A new shoe that proves to be a good one sells out especially in the largest and smallest sizes that I assume they make fewer of. For very rocky sections of any trail a type of shoe called an approach shoe is your best solution if you want to stay away from hiking boots or mid ankle height types of shoes. Both of those, if designed for hiking, tend to be a little stiffer and often have full length rock plates as opposed to just in the forefoot like the Traverse. The best approach shoe on the market, in my opinion, is the La Sportiva TX4 and its replacement beginning this year called the TX4 EVO. They are stiffer than the average trail runner and do an excellent job of protecting your feet against rocks. They only weigh a little more than most trail runners. They would work well for you in New Hampshire and the early part of Maine. They aren’t the best solution for Vermont though as their Nubuck uppers won’t dry as fast as a trail runner. I suspect you’ll have lots of mud in Vermont if this rain cycle doesn’t take a break soon. Good luck up the trail.
