As a 34 year old gamer that, at this point in my life, is a strictly casual gamer - I loved this. The last game I sought to be a completionist in was Fallout 4. High on Life combines the perfect amount of FPS, grinding, chill puzzles, and unlockables to keep me hooked to the end. Many of the mechanics and gameplay tropes felt as learnable as a late 90's platformer. I did experience some achievement breaking flaws that are going to make me play again (now fixed), but honestly I'm not upset to have to go through it again.

I love the humor as well. I literally watched 45 minutes of the TV while I was eating. I have to say even though I was looking forward to this for months, I kept my expectations reasonable and I was definitely pleasantly surprised. My biggest gripe was also how underwhelming the kick of the weapons felt, oh and the state of PC performance day one but that was mostly fixed pretty quickly, every other aspect of the game (including the humour) felt more than decent to me, at least for how far into the game I've gotten (I'm not rushing it). The thing about the humour dragging on is simply Justin not knowing when to call it a day, Dan Harmon is not around to reign him in but that's not as much of a turn off for me as it understandably could be for some. Overall pretty damn solid, streets ahead of Trover which was also enjoyable (in VR).

Hey, pedantic game designer here. Shotguns are actually not the easiest weapon to get right. There are a number of dynamics to consider including slugs, spread, and incidentals like weight and recoil. Those all affect the variable utility of the weapon in different gameplay scenarios, from CQC to crowd control. Sniper rifles, however ARE the easiest weapons to get right. Explicit utility and functionality makes it pretty simple to hone in on what matters. Anyway, luv ya! 💖

I really don't need the disclaimer that this game is divisive at the top of the video was necessary. People should already be somewhat familiar before watching these before you buys imo. At least that's how I interpret these videos since they are pretty exclusively for marquee releases that people are familiar with. Anyways, I'm so glad this game exists. This feels like a game from years past where not every game was designed to reach the widest possible audience and cast the widest possible net. This game isn't going to be for everyone and that is exactly why it is so charming. As you said, if you like Rick and Morty, you're going to like this. Accounting+ (devs precious release in VR) was such a pleasant surprise. I remember hearing about it and buying it randomly one night for the original Oculus Rift. Admittedly I smoked a joint before firing it up, but I laughed so damn hard at that game. That damn tree guy had me in stitches and it was unlike anything I'd ever experienced in a game. Especially with it feeling so intimate in VR, it was unlike anything I'd ever experienced in the medium. This game is expanded on that and I really really like being able to thoroughly laugh at a video game. It's a unique premise of a game in a sea of action adventure open world games that tend to blend together. The industry could really benefit from weird games like this and I truly hope other games follow in its footsteps. The price tag is very steep for what it is and only huge fans of Rick and Morty should pick it up. Otherwise you run the risk of being disappointed. But that's coming from a PC gamer who has been spoiled with a cheap games perspective for years. If you're more used to console pricing then I have no issues with the price. In fact I have no regrets with my purchase because I knew what I was in for by thoroughly researching it, but I can see people being disappointed. If you're not sure maybe wait a few months. I can imagine it will drop to $40 before too long and that feels about right to me. Again I'm so happy this even exists. They really took a chance with this game and they didn't half ass it at all. This is a polished product with great graphics and pretty top tier animations which really helps to deliver the comedy. It's two strongest attributes. The gaming industry could really use weird games and it could really use funny games. It feels like it's been awhile since we've seen a big release that takes so many chances like this and it really nails what it sets out to do. People are going to hate this game and complain about it online. That is exactly why it's a good product. It knows what it offers and never strays from that to try and appeal outside of its target demographic. One of my favorite experiences in 2022 no doubt. Such a pleasant surprise.

It has been a blast to play. We get so many of the same FPS these days. It was great playing a fun FPS that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's goofy and I'm looking forward to whatever Justin Roiland comes up with next.

For anyone saying that the comedy or people talk too much - there is an option in the game to scale up or down the amount of talking. So while the criticism about constant talking is recognized, its very easily fixable for anyone.

From what I’ve seen of Justin Rolland’s work (in particular clips from this game, Rick And Morty and Trover Saves The Universe) it sucks that the humor seems to rely solely on being annoying because the sci fi concepts and worlds seem really interesting.

I have had a blast playing this game so far. Great change of pace from the never ending sequels, and “new games” from studios that are just the same mechanics with a new coat of paint. It sucks that publishers probably have the ability to fund games like this but choose not to in favor of yet another live service borefest.

Really reminds me of the stuff I loved and played on PS1 when I was growing up. I didn't think I'd like the humour, but I was already laughing in the tutorial with the guy screaming about how he was divorced. Most of the characters are very easy to warm to. I've been annoyed once so far and that was in the jungle with the floating security thing telling me his whole life story. I like cheesing the levels too. Feels like they didn't expect people to get to certain areas by certain methods. I've been pleasantly surprised in that aspect though, once or twice the pink guide guy has popped up telling me I wasn't supposed to get there in that way. Only issue for me is the shooting so far. The deadzone is a little beefy and, on the whole, it's a little bit shallow.

I couldn't agree more with your commentary, excellent summary! I agree that the dialogue is funny but can get long winded, which makes me fortunate that most dialogues can be terminated early at any time. The only downfall is that you might miss some funny lore while trying to cut out the BS! We'll just have to play (and listen to) the whole game to find out!

Had never watched Rick & Morty before, but since I started playing it, this is really the most fun and laughs I've had in a game. There's even several movies i was able watch either at the theater or on the TV inside the house which is unheard of from any other game other than GTA.

I am a picky guy when rating games and I gave this game a 10 out of 10. This is a amazing experience. Love the weapons and their secondary is really well made. This is one of those games that if you know what it is and are into it, it's great. I enjoyed it because I don't mind that sort of humor. Some moments were especially hilarious and it was cool to hear Joel Haver and Trent, plus Zach from OneyPlays. They're all everywhere in this game and it's just awesome. It also says a lot about some reviewers who went on to play the game and gave it a bad rating purely because of the dialog and humor because they expected intelligent writing and characters, I guess? It feels like if they were to rate Witcher 3 badly because they expected to fly planes and not be in a fantasy genre, or rate Mass Effect badly because 90% of it isn't spent riding a rhinoceros. Like, this studio showed us 15 minutes of the game several months ago and we got exactly what they promised. This game is 100% what they said it would be. No misleading marketing, broken promises, built up expectations. To complain this game isn't what was expected is just stupid to me. We should all know exactly what we're getting with this game. If the humor isn't (insert shitty journalist)'s style, that's entirely on them, not the game.
