The ambulance/police car/fire vehicle is a good recommendation, I've done that on three different vehicles for a very budget friendly upgrade. 98 Dodge neon with an alternator from a Dodge intrepid police car, 99 Ford Ranger with an alternator from a Ford F450 ambulance with the 7.3 powerstroke, and an '06 Silverado 2500 with a complete dual alternator setup from a Chevy Kodiak 5500 plow/salt truck.

That is correct I was having issues with my new gmc build added dual fans along with 4k system my stock alternator would not keep up. So my buddy told me about the Hd alternator he has with no issues.

"Of course I'll fix the audio." That's not what you did.

One way to increase alternator output at idle is a smaller pulley!

most stock alts dont do 160 amps. my 2012 silverado does 14.8 hot and 15v coldstart until i went 15.5 constant

You can change the gm stock alternators voltage up and down with a simple resistor that you can make or buy them for what ever voltage you are trying to run Also stocks make full power at idle Big upgraded ones do not make power till 2-3k rpms or you need to change to a small pully to speed it up

i drive a '07 Ranger so even a dual factory alt setup would only give me a peak of 260 amps so the Autotech 320 (179 idle, 349 cruise @ 14.6-14.8v) i have is the better choice in my scenario.

About 15 years ago, I helped my buddy put a pretty decent system in his '98 ranger with the 3.0 engine. We found through the forums, that a 7.3 powerstroke alternator is the same mounting pattern has the 3.0 and 4.0 engine, but you do have to change the pulley out because the power stroke is like a six or seven rib, and the ranger is a four rib belt. We managed to find one off a ambulance that was like 200 or 220 amp, for $40. I think his stock alternator was like 110. That might be a route worth looking into for yourself or anyone else trying to bump on a budget with a ranger or explorer with those generations of engine.

Now I understand why my amazon $120 alternator did 244.5 amps AT IDLE. because it's meant to do it at idle

The way they make them output more at low rpms is done by the wire size and the amount of wraps of wire they use on the outer coils. They are just an AC 3 phase motor with a rectifier and diodes The core is sent 10-12v to control the min-maximum output overall
