FYI Resources is positioning itself to be a producer of 4N and 5N high purity alumina (HPA) in the rapidly developing high-tech product markets.
Following the signing of the Term Sheet in October 2021, FYI Resources and Alcoa Australia are jointly developing the High Purity Alumina (HPA) project.
Metallurgy Pty Ltd and IMO (Independent Metallurgical Operations Pty Ltd) have been instrumental in supporting FYI Resources’ endeavours to produce its high-grade HPA product through the following work:
- Flowsheet development
- Optimisation to produce 4N and 5N HPA
- Design, construction and operation of complex pilot plant for generation of product on a continuous basis for both proof of process and end-user evaluation
HPA is increasingly becoming the primary sought-after input material for certain high-tech products such as LEDs and sapphire glass products. High-purity alumina (HPA) is a processed premium non-metallurgical alumina product characterised by its purity level - i.e. 99.99% (4N) or 99.999% (5N).
The market price, application and performance of HPA varies widely according to its degree of purity. HPA is used because of its superior properties and characteristics, such as excellent corrosion and scratch resistance, high brightness, and its ability to withstand extreme temperatures. It is used as a base material in the manufacture of sapphire substrates for applications such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), in the manufacture of artificial sapphire glass (eg mobile phone and television screens) and in certain battery and power storage components, artificial gemstones and special space, aeronautical and medical applications.
Metallurgy Pty Ltd is looking forward to future involvement in continued development of this in-demand product.
