Today's video is about the results of my search for quality buttons for leather goods. In fact, there are a large number of buttons and manufacturers too, but as one seller said, of what you can buy in Ukraine, 99 percent of a low-quality product and only a few import buttons from well-established manufacturers. This can be observed for yourself. To buy and work with high-quality buttons, you need to make a lot of effort and spend a lot of time.
What are the difficulties? What's the difference? And how to work with buttons? I'll tell you in this video.
Buttons were originally invented for clothing as a replacement for other fasteners and buttons over a hundred years ago. And manufacturers began to appear in different countries, expanding the range of buttons. Because of this, there is no single standard, the very principle of operation of the button is the same, but the sizes of the constituent parts of most brands are different. Why certain sizes were chosen for production is not known to me. This is the first difficulty in working with buttons. Before purchasing buttons, you need to clarify the parameters of each part and find suitable installers. If we take lower quality Chinese and Turkish buttons, then it is easy to find installers for them, but with more expensive high-quality buttons, everything was not so simple.
Having studied the situation in our market, I found three categories of buttons:
- Budget, low-quality productions China, Taiwan
- Budget slightly better quality Turkey
- High-quality expensive buttons made in Italy, Germany, Japan
The first and second categories can be combined into one. They are made of soft metals, with low-quality coating. Often, the details of such buttons are deformed even during installation, they have a weak fixation, they may not work well after installation, they can deform when fastened, the details of such buttons can be defective. I will make a reservation that the situation is a little better with Turkish buttons. And until recently, I put Turkish buttons on products. What's great about this category is that it has a uniform size standard and there are no problems with installers.
The third category is a completely different level of quality. Each of the manufacturers has its own long history, some even centuries. But all of them are united by the desire for the highest quality of their products. Such buttons are often made of brass, or stainless steel, with a resistant different coating. Defective parts are simply missing, if you buy 10 buttons, then 10 will be installed.
From what I found in our market:
- Prym buttons from Germany.
- Italian Fiocchi buttons. I found information that it is now a subsidiary of Prym.
- Popular Japanese buttons (YKK) YKK and HASI-HATO.
Structurally, the buttons do not differ, only the components, sizes and coatings differ, which can even be made of plastic or leather. What made my life difficult was finding button installers.
The choice of buttons is the case when it is not worth saving. If we try to make a product from high-level leather, then the installed low-quality fittings will erase all our efforts.
