This video is the latest in a series showing the lesser-known regions of the magnificent 301 hectare Kulaluk Lease in Darwin won by the Larrakia people in the Australian Aboriginal land rights struggle of the 1970s. The mid-line of the Ludmilla tidal creek forms the southern boundary, included in the lease because of its significance to the Larrakia people. Aboriginal people in Darwin fish, crab and gather shellfish in and around the tidal waters of the creek that floods a vast mangrove system on twice-daily tides of up to 8 metres. However, the creek is endangered by plans to create canal housing and marina, in secret deals between developers and the leaseholders. Only fierce opposition by traditional owners and the public has prevented the plans. Early in the morning on June 9, 2016, Dr Bill Day, Nicholas Gouldhurst and David Percival set off from Nightcliff boat ramp in a small aluminium dinghy to cross Ludmiila Bay and journey up the tidal creek on a 7.4 metre tide. This is a record of that journey.
