Episode 05: Student veterans come to campus with all kinds of uniquely valuable life experience and skills from their service time. But they face many challenges that traditional students don't. Not only are they adapting to post-military life and may benefit from mental health and other supports, but the majority of student veterans are first-gen college students, and many have kids or spouses. Student veterans have already given so much and have vast potential -- how can universities better support this vital student population?
Cobretti explores the topic with Jose Soto, an Air Force veteran and psych major at @SaintXavierUniversity1846, who also serves as Vice President of the Student Veteran Alliance, and Pat Beckwith, former Company Commander in the Army @nationalguard and current Director of Military & Veteran Services at the @UniversityOfMontana. These experts offer insights into what schools are doing now and what they can do better to support student vets. They also touch on some other questions - like, do marines actually eat crayons?
