A webinar focusing on the enabling legal and regulatory environment for philanthropy directed to higher education in sub-Saharan Africa.
This webinar sought to amplify the voices of a range of thought leaders from within the philanthropy ecosystem for higher education in Africa to explore the opportunities and challenges that the enabling legal and regulatory environment for philanthropy brings to donors, academic advancement officers, and both public and private universities. The webinar shared the findings of the 2022 Global Philanthropy Environment Index in a short presentation as a starting point for the panel before launching into a lively discussion between the gathered experts.
The philanthropic environment across Africa is rooted in the continent’s diverse cultural and religious heritage and influenced by current technological, political, and economic environments. The 2022 Global Philanthropy Environment Index (GPEI) shows that six of the thirteen African countries covered had a favorable environment for philanthropy. It also revealed that economic troubles have led to an unfavorable economic environment for philanthropy in 8 of the 13 countries.
With funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, this webinar convenes a panel of experts to discuss the enabling environment for philanthropy, especially as it relates to higher education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa.
