The 10K, zero fixed rate I-Bond I purchased on 6/1/2022 is now worth $10,880. I'm up by $880! So going forward, I will make 3.94% for 6 months not only on the $10,000 (which comes out to $197), but also on the $880 (which comes out to $17). The longer I hold it, and the larger it grows, the bigger the compounding effect. And if I sell, I will have to pay a 3 month penalty AND owe taxes on the proceeds, which is stepping backward! Besides, if/when interest rates shoot back up to the 10% range, the difference between a 10% yield and 11.3% won't seem very significant and I will glad I never sold any I-bonds!

I have 20k in I-Bonds. I started when the rate was 9.62% which was a no brainer, my wife and I bought 10k and also gifted each other 10K. Since then I have invested in several T-Bill ladders. 17 week being the first, then 8 week, then 4 week when they spiked. Things seem to have stabilized with 26 week at the top, so I am moving my 4s and 8s to the 26s. I will probably never buy more I-Bonds, as they have too many rules. I may hold them until the 5 years is up. I am 73 and don't see any reason to go beyond a 26 week term, especially when that is currently the best level for T-Bills.

Even though you are limited to $10K per person in I Bond purchase, there is a way to add 5K more (on married filing jointly as i did) to your I bond purchase on top of 10K standard amount. It is by using the Tax refund amount. If you have a Tax refund coming you can set aside $5K from the refund amount by filling out a form (dont recall the form #). One way to do it regularly every year is over pay taxes during the year and use the excess refund amount to use the 5K buy. Right now i am happy with T bills paying 5.4% range on 4 month terma which is pretty decent.

@@oleskool4908 When you purchase them through Treasury Direct, the interest is deposited twice per year (every six months) to your linked bank account. So, for example, I bought a 7 year , $7000 Treasury Note last month with an interest rate of 4.875%. On the Note issue date, I logged into Treasury Direct, and viewed the information for the Note. It displayed the date for the next interest payment and the amount. For that particular Note, the next interest payment will be $170.63 on 04/30/24, which is half of the interest for the year. Unlike an I bond, Note interest is not reinvested. Yes, you do pay Federal income tax on that interest in the year that it is accrued. Treasury Note interest is state tax exempt, so depending on which state you live in, that gooses your return slightly. I live in PA, where the state income tax is 3.07%. So a Treasury Note with an interest rate of 4.875% would be comparable to a fully taxable return of approximately 5.03%.

According to Jennifer the best time for me to redeem is from Dec '23. However, as I was about to redeem my current i-bonds I do want to purchase another $10K, but I wanted to delay my purchase until January to delay federal tax bite until 2024's return. However, since I want to maximize my potential to purchase as much i-bonds as well I think my best path is to redeem my current Sept'22 I-bonds in Dec '23 and purchase $10K of I-bonds with the high fixed rate in Dec to max out my '23 purchases, then if I have the money available purchase another $10K in Jan'24. While this does move my interest tax hit in 2023 i do get to add another $10K in purchases in '23. Any feedback on this line of reasoning to redeem my Sept'22 I-bonds in Dec'23 and make new purchases in Dec '23 and Jan '24? Thanks for any feedback!

Would you put in all $10,000 for the 2024 year in January 2024 to get the the 1.3% fixed rate... or maybe $6-7,000 and wait and see for the next 6 months if they are better rates. Thank you! last year.. i maxed everything in January...and couldnt buy more ibonds.

Hi Jennifer, I hope you can assist me with redeeming my I-Bonds. I have some bonds that I would like to redeem from October 1, 2022. Could you please provide me with the necessary steps to do so? Additionally, I was wondering if you could explain how TDirect discounts 3 months of interest on their website. I did not see 3-months interest discount at review just before submit the order to redeem.

I don’t understand why a 1.3% fixed rate with a lower total rate is preferred over an Ibond with 0% fixed rate with a higher total interest rate. Someone please explain.

Because the variable rate changes every 6 months. Their have been months when 0% fixed earns 0% interest. You can see the yield history of I-bonds on a chart on TreasuryDirect.gov

Hi Jenn, I have three i-bonds - purchased Dec 2021, Jan 2022 and Feb 2023. Was thinking of selling the 2021 bond for the new 1.3 fixed. Will I have to wait until 2024 to buy another since I already purchased 10k in 2023? I'm aware of gifting but lets say that is not an option. Thanks!

Jen, thank you for the update! If I have to wait until Jan to buy at the new I bond rate, since I maxed for 2023 already, will it still take me 8 months or will it take longer to earn back the 3 month penalty from cashing in my original 9.62% I bond with the 0% fixed rate? Not sure if I'm really looking at a year to earn back the 3 month loss and tax payment. Is there a calculator to help with this? Part 2: Is it okay to go all in with 10K in January or do we think the fixed rate will go even higher than 1.3% in May 24?

The eight months applies so long as you have a fixed rate of zero percent & are losing the last 3 months interest at the semi-annual inflation rate of 1.69%

@@yuanguo6649 I never qualified for a Roth IRA while I was working, but not that I'm retired I'm going to start rolling over 10k per year into a Roth IRA from my non-Roth IRA. Rolling over an entire IRA would be a huge tax bill, so I will do it 10k at a time. Besides, taxes are likely to rise, so hopefully I will be paying taxes at a lower rate this way.

I would sell at beginning of January 2024 (to minimize your interest lost), then either buy new I bonds or buy an 8 or 13 week T bill so that you get an interest rate >5% during that time and then the money will be available in April if you decide to buy then, and you’ll have a better sense of what the new fixed rate and variable rate will be in May to decide whether you want to buy in April or May.

A purchase of the new I-bond locks you in for 12 months. So, if the nominal rate on the current 1-year treasury exceeds the November ibond rate (which it does), the argument for purchasing a similar term ibond is not convincing. Particularly when you consider: 1. The subsequent 6-month ibond rate will likely be lower, and 2. After 12 months, you lose 3 months interest on your ibond investment. If the counter argument is that ibonds are purchased for inflation protection, then why not buy TIPs, which are a more efficient and cost effective inflation hedge-with a higher net yield-without a $10k cap.

I have maxed out my I Bonds a couple years ago. It was my belief that they roll over every 6 months at a new rate. Is that not the case??? In other words, does it make any sense to cash out old I Bonds that I have held over a year to buy new I Bonds? Thank you in advance.
@robloxvids2233

There are two rates: fixed and variable. Your old bonds had a 0% fixed rate. They only roll into the new variable rate (3.97%). The reason you would want to sell old bonds to get these is you lock in the fixed rate, meaning these ibonds will theoretically always beat inflation by 1.3%, for the next 30 years.
