This has got to be my favorite piece of paper mache art I’ve ever seen. I wish there was more detail in how you put each part together.

I really love this Joni ! I admire that you always find a way to make things work with what you have it really speaks of your talent and creativity.Your sculptures have a traditional folk art aesthetic but have very modern simple clean lines .This highland cow was well worth working through the challenges you ran into sculpting it ...It turned out to be one of your best pieces

That's incredible! I want to make a Star Wars bantha head, and this has so much great advice for how to do it. It turned out really well - as a Dundonian we have a few Highland cows around the area and it looks just like them! :) Sewing the hairs/yarn into wefts beforehand makes it much easier to work with - you can do this by lining them up and sewing them to a thin strip of fabric, or sew them to a piece of tissue paper and ripping the paper out afterwards. Then you can glue or sew the wefts in one long strip to the thing. I sometimes make plushies that have hair and that makes it so much easier than rooting the hairs or dealing with the individual strands. Shops that sell synthetic hair for weaves or hair accessories may be able to help you out too, it's the same technique.

Sewing them together would have been so much easier! If I ever make another one, I'll remember to do that. Thanks!

That came out amazing. :) I see cows all the time where I live when I am out driving around but none like that. I know someday I will try something like that with polymer clay. :) - Heidi

Great idea! I actaully just bought a video about working with polymer clay. I've never done it, but I can't wait to get started with it, although I might stick to people faces for a while. If you do make a cow, be sure to come show it off on my blog. I'd love to see it.

Ultimate Paper Mache Uh oh you will give me competition :P I love making faces in polymer clay. So far only made pretty small pendant size ones though. It seems to come easy to me. I had a blast around Halloween making zombie busts. :p I posted some of the pics to my Instagram of them. :D - Heidi

Whenever I need to hot glue yarn/hair to something I make bunches and fold them over, tying them in the middle to make a small knot that's easy to push into the hot glue without burning fingers or leaving a mess. Just a tip for future projects!

There is a nice epoxy like material too called Magic Sculp that is pretty hand workable and cures really tougher than polymer clay. I've been planning to use it for armitures where you may want flexible joints like elbows and knees, but simulate bones. I've gotten this product from the Compleat Sculptor, they also have a similar item called Magic Smooth that can be used to give a hard exterior to foam. This might be handy when you make a softer base, but might need some areas harder. Just a suggestion.

I would love to have a go at making this Joni. What kind of wire are you using for the horns? Wire coat hangers are too rigid . . .
@UltimatePaperMache

I used some wire that was sold as "merchant's wire." I've never heard it called that anywhere else, but it's almost as rigid as coat hangers. If you wrap the wire with crumpled foil, you could also use a heavy aluminum armature wire. Any wire would work, in fact, as long as it's reinforced with foil. Have fun with it!

With the hair what you could have done was make clusters of it and loop them at the top then hot glued them that's what I use to do when I use to make costume wigs with that same type of yarn
@UltimatePaperMache

That does sound like a much better solution. If I ever put another wig on a cow, I will keep it in mind. :)

My wall sculptures have a flat cardboard back, and I just cut a small hole near the top and put it over a nail. Not fancy, but it works. 😀

I have a cow pattern that would work really well for a Highland Cow. Just make the horns longer than I did - and add that crazy hairdo, of course. 😀 You can see it here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/cow-mask
