In each country - place on this planet - the powers of the ground speak to and form those who are willing to listen - which is why humans are ready to give their lives for "their" country/place. I think this has got nothing to do with patriotism. Wherever you look / the earth, the ground you have been born upon teaches you one fundamental lesson, gives you one wish/desire> that for freedom. Scottish music is the voice of its grounds - and in all its songs there is that thirst for freedom ...what a pity so few will listen!

Beautifully said and quite true, but it is not the land alone - the people are a vital piece of this resonant phenomena, though it transcends the sum of its parts. Scots and Irish Colonials seem to retain a yearning, despite their grandsires having left due to material hardship (intertwined with political "developments") in many a case. Yet they hear the call still - and it can seem a little off to those who stayed wi' the land, and fair enough, half the story is missing and inevitably a disconnect exists as such, but the yearning is there and it speaks to something pre-rational within us that can only come from being of this People.
@kaikwa4160

Beautifully said, however, your understanding of Scottish history is based on emotions, not so much on historical facts. Scotland is _fighting_ for its freedom from the union it created and routinely advocated for after declaring bankruptcy trying to colonise Panama. I'm not sure if you're deliberately ignoring that, or the fact that 100 years prior sowing the seeds of it when James VI of Scotland became James I of England? Scotland's history can't be compared to that of Ireland. Sure, there are a lot of things about Scotland I personally love, and admire. But, for them to play the victim that they clearly aren't is just unacceptable.

He was clearly attempting to speak on behalf of Scotland and claiming that Scotland, as a whole or by a majority, wants to leave the United Kindom which he had no right to do. Like so many SNP supporters you confuse your personal opinion with fact. Have you forgotten the result of the 2014 ("once in a generation") referendum or do you just prefer to ignore it? The majority of Scots, let me remind you, voted for Scotland to remain as part of the United Kingdom - and that is an ACTUAL VERIFIABLE FACT, not just an opinion claiming to be a fact. How dare you tell me that I should leave the country of my ancestors so that you can fulfill your private fantasy? You also demonstrate the self-righteous arrogance of the fanatical SNP supporter who would banish from Scotland anyone who disagrees with them. The SNP is a fanatical cult whose supporters can't tell the difference between fact and fantasy. That is why I and a majority of patriotic Scots voted No in 2014. The Highland Clans were hardly a model of a Utopian society. Most people lived in abject poverty and misery within the strict & brutal clan system, many in a position comparable to slavery. The saddest part about Culloden is that a large amount of people suffered due to the foolish ambitions of a man who was the third generation of an exiled monarchy, who knew more about Italy than Scotland, who was there for his "Birthright" not for the people of Scotland. And who had no place in Scotland or England, most men followed him because their Clan leaders told them to do so, because other clans they had feuds with were on the other side and to disobey would mean mutilation or death. Chances are if you have Scottish heritage that your ancestors fought on the Governments side rather than on that of the clans (those clans that threw their broadswords in with the old pretender, most didn't).

The short answer is, you won't. Scottish literature gets going in the 15th-16thC, then goes into hibernation until the late 18thC. Did you mean a children's story set in the 1500s, or from the 1500s? Either way, you'll draw a blank. In the 19thC, writing for children gets going with Scott's 'Tales Of A Grandfather', more an adult-level read nowadays, followed by the great adventure stories of R L Stevenson, also pitched way too high for a lot of modern kids' reading level.

Thankfully, there is a democratic method to change rather than the wars fought even 100 years ago. If the majority of the voting people want the change, then it can happen. If not, then no change. The conversation of an Independent Scotland continues because a large enough number of Scots are still interested in it. Everyone with an interest should vote. I, for one, am interested to see how the world changes in the next decade. Just as I was when the EU was formed. The only certainty is that people are unhappy with the status quo. What that will mean for the future? That is the question.
