A mysterious form of diabetes-formerly classified by the World Health Organization as malnutrition-related diabetes-may affect tens of millions of people living in lower- and middle-income countries. These individuals often suffer from poor outcomes, as so little is understood about how to treat the condition. In the first comprehensive study of this condition, Meredith Hawkins, M.D., M.S., and colleagues partnered with Christian Medical College in Vellore, India to demonstrate that this condition is significantly different from type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Hawkins is professor of medicine, the Harold and Muriel Block Chair in Medicine, and director of the Global Diabetes Institute at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
