each faring half cost $3 million each. The boats to catch the faring cost a fraction off that price, the reason space x stopped catching the faring was because only 1 in every 10 faring were being caught. Putting extendable catch arms on the booster and starship might help.
@boggless2771

also, farings will be obsolete once starship is ready. Whatever money they put into developing faring reuse is money that could go to speeding up starship.

After several years, I still get a thrill out of watching SpaceX takeoffs and landings. Now that we've seen Starship in most of her glory, the Falcon 9 looks tiny. That seems weird because there's no sense of scale in the videos, but I know the Falcon 9 is much smaller.

Great update Kevin, as always. A quick question... why is the exhaust of Raptor 2 pink but BE4 is blue? Same fuel but different flame color.
@manuelsilva8640
8 ай бұрын
Not exactly the same fuel and engine type. The BE-4 is an oxygen-rich liquefied-methane (LNG icludes traces of ethane, propane, and butane) both not subcooled fueled staged-combustion rocket engine with 134 bar of chamber pressure. The Raptor is an full-flow purified methane-lox (both subcooled) staged-combustion-cycle rocket engine with 300 bar of chamber pressure.

Knowing by now how deeply forward-thinking Elon is, I would be surprised if Starship was actually his endgame. I don't see how it would be possible to do all he plans to do (colonizing planets and beyond) with such a "small" ship (comparatively speaking obviously). My (un)educated guess is that if we really want to make it work there has to be a better, more efficient way in his mind. For example a much bigger ship, possibly built in orbit, that only goes from orbit of planet 1 to orbit of planet 2, with a bunch of Starships to load/unload and refuel said ship from/to each planet. I would bet a decent amount of money his actual endgame is to make Starship work consistently, make it profitable with point to point connections on earth, then go bigger, way bigger.

Elon didn't seem very enthusiastic this time. Maybe he begins to realize Starship will mostly be for LTO and it will require a 3 stage rocket to get to the moon efficiently? Not a bad 3 stage rocket design like SLS of course, but one like Saturn V was. The unmatched masterpiece engineers can't reproduce as they can't think that way anymore without overcomplicating things to absurdity.

We want to go to the moon and mars but we keep adding satellites, how are we going to get passed these mega constellations? What happens when the orbit of these satellites start to decay,could they smash in to each other? I think we need to cleap up space befor expanding. Why can spaceX have a prototype exploited over the ocean and not have to clean it upp? Why do a environment assessment if the damage they do doesn't mater?
@just_archan
8 ай бұрын
Matter of scale. Look at any major city, in MUCH smaller area you have millions of vehicles. And orbit is "3d", so it have also "deep". So while numbers in constellations are huge, in reality even near orbit is very very empty
