This series began in the early 1950s, when I was an infant, toddler, and then kindergartener, etc. I remember hearing the opening announcement about the “militia,” etc., but I did not yet have the faculties to watch and enjoy the show-not until now! And now, I am appreciating them very much. The dialogue is a bit stiff and stayed by today’s standards, but the character of Dan Mathews played by Broderick Crawford is terrific. He is, of course, the same rapid-fire man who played the incomparable Willie Stark in the 1949 classic film version of Robert Penn Warren’s ‘All The King’s Men.”

They goofed on the car switch scene as two Jaguars were used. The first was darker colored than the other one and had rear fender skirts and the other one didn't (but both had the same driver) I remember one in my neighborhood as a kid. A college guy drove it for about a year but then went into the Army, spent a year in Vietnam but when he came back he didn't want the car anymore. He decided to get married instead (no thanks!) I'm not sure how it works now, because we see product names all over tv shows now, but it used to be copyright infringement to mention or show product names. Even things like watch brands. I've seen a few episodes of this show where a few of them are noting exact times and "synchronizing watches", then they'll show the dial of one or more of them and there's an obvious white-out marking over the brand name. Every now and then, you'll catch a car name or emblem though. When I was a kid, i asked my Dad why the names weren't on some items. Like on a Pepsi can... it was spot on. It was obviously Pepsi, but the name was very conspicuously missing. I think anymore that companies are just happy for the free publicity and advertising, and most likely even pay for product placement. But I'm not in advertising or tv shows or anything even vaguely related' so don't quote me.
@bertgrau9246
4 жыл бұрын
@@douglasharvey8331 I think what the problem was, the car companies would have to pay for the advertising. That's why they didn't mention the car names. Thing was they (car company) probably figured just the cars being on the show was free advertising.

My Father had a 1946 Roadmaster in 1955...and that was a tank with a straight eight very powerful ....I don't think they made v8's at that time yet..he then got a 53 Buick stick on the columm and v eight.

That's the draw to this series along w/Crawford and the writing.....seat time with Buick's, Oldsmobile's, Mercury's and the occasional Chevy....also spying traffic from back then....great stuff

Did anybody notice the XK-120? My goodness, that was the real star of this show. That kid's parents must have had money. That was a $5000 car. He sure didnt pay for it while going to college! Blooper : In the first shot of the Jag, it's got a wheel skirt on it. At second shot, its gone ! Just looked again and the first Jag (with the skirt) is red. The second is white. Compare it against the cab and see !!! It's a totally different car. The first has the side vent open, the second closed.

The "kid" was 24. $5000 for the sports car, and at least $70,000 for a modern equivalent.

William N.Robson who wrote this was a prolific radio writer and producer. Byron Kane was a prolific radio actor. Lots of talent in these programs, sometimes more obscure than they deserve (including Broderick Crawford}

Those WERE the "GOOD OLD DAYS" for sure! I remember being able to drive a motorcycle with JUST a regular DL. Was NO need for special endorsements, fees or concern about engine displacement. Today, you don't need a DL or cycle endorsement to ride a 50cc moped because EVERYONE KNOWS you will not die on a machine that tops out at 35MPH, but if you ride an 80cc bike WITHOUT a cycle endorsement (or at least a cycle permit) you MIGHT GO TO JAIL because that bike will go 45MPH, a death machine! LOL

This was one of their most expensive shows. Four cops, two cars, for a half-hour drama in the '50's. Big production bucks.😜

That "standard transmission" really was STANDARD in MOST cars back then, usually column shift 3-speed (except MB, column shift 4-speed)!

Final answer: this is an XK-140 for the following reasons: Chrome bar on bonnet (hood) and trunk @ 5:18 and 6:24 . One piece (2 pieces on the 120) front bumper with 2 bumperets, 7 vertical bars front grill exclusive to the XK-140, fog lights for the USA market all seen from 9:52 to 10:02 . Cannot be an XK-150 as it does not have a one-piece windshield and XK-150 started in 1957, this episode was filmed in 1956 as confirmed with the Copyright at end of episode shown in roman numbers MCMLVI.

Dan makes a quibb in one episode that they only have one Trooper for every 100 sq miles (so he cant block every road). The Troopers are patrolling by themselves too. HQ doesnt look flash either. I imagine cars might be either a TV thing or perhaps they were that expensive back then.
