For much of the period from 1955 until 1965 most of Crawford's television roles involved ZIV Television, which was among the relative handful of producers willing to accept the occasional challenges inherent with working with the hard-living and hard-drinking Crawford. Years later, Frederick Ziv admitted in an interview, "To be honest, Broderick could be a handful!"

"Ken...we got a dandy here" (Mathews to Williams) This one was a nail biter but Dan handles it the best he could. Brod delivered an excellent performance here. This was one of just three episodes that was filmed partially at night (the other two being "Father Thief" and "Plant Robbery" both from season 1) The building was used in three previous episodes, one as a home and the other two also as a diner. Doris is played by Virginia Arness (married to James at the time) She died in 1977 of a drug overdose. Sherwood Price who plays the thug passed away in 2020 at age 91.

Crawford's heavy drinking increased during the filming of Highway Patrol, eventually resulting in several arrests and stops for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), which eventually gained him a suspended driving license.[5] While representing the California Highway Patrol as "Chief Mathews", Crawford was known with considerable embarrassment by the CHP as "Old 502" due to his habit of driving under the influence of alcohol ("Code 502" was the CHP police radio code for drunken driving). According to the show's creator, Guy Daniels, "We got all the dialogue in by noon, or else we wouldn't get it done at all. He [Crawford] would bribe people to bring him booze on the set." The show used their CHP technical advisor, Officer Frank Runyon, to keep the actor sober: "I was told to keep that son of a bitch away from a bottle. I think his license was suspended. Some scenes had to be shot on private roads so that Brod could drive." Eventually the drinking strained the show's relationship with the CHP as well as Crawford's relationship with ZIV

Dan to guy seriously wounded with a gunshot to the gut: "Now look, don't move!" Then, the lady ex-hostage fails to tell HP officers that the perp is seriously wounded in the leg (she tied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding). As others point out here, Dan is soused, no doubt about it, and the crook fires 8 (not 7) shots from what cannot be more than a 6 shot, more probably a 5 shot, snub revolver. The cops standing around outside the cafe during the negotiations by bullhorn seem to have their fingers on the trigger of their revolvers, never a good idea till one intends to shoot. But, in the end, Dan stares down the bad guy and, despite the condition he's obviously in, lights up a cigarette and then drives away. The good old days.

One of the more interesting episodes in a show that was always entertaining. Crawford was clearly drunk here. His reckless driving at 4:41 shows why he often received DUI citations and had his driver's license suspended. Mind you, this was in the 50s when only the worst offenders lost their license. It should also be noted that this episode from 1959 was during the time when Crawford was burnt out and wanted out of the series. By this point his drinking was out of control because of the relentless production schedule, and despite being offered a generous percentage of the show's revenue by ZIV to remain one more season, he declined.

This is not true. I am connected to Mr. Crawford I that my fiance's second cousin's brother in law's grandfather had a gardener whose wife was a cook for Crawford's beloved Saint Bernard, Floyd. Floyd could not tolerate regular dog food as it gave him acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome, as well as bad breath, and required a special diet. The show stopped production because of Crawford's secret wedding with Jack Webb and the two sailed around the world for an extended honeymoon on a yacht lent to the couple by its owner, George Fenneman.
