+Major Mike Like the other post, I sadly have to agree with you and feel blessed to have grown up then also. A coarseness and crass materialism have overtaken our culture. I got out of teaching 10 years ago because the profession was changing so much. Now teaching "values clarification" and teaching kids how to use condoms and birth control have replaced the curriculum that you and I grew up with. I was born in 56, so we are about the same age. The last year I taught almost every child in my class(5th grade) was living with a single parent or grandparent. When I was in 5th grade in 1966, I can only remember one kid who was living with just his Mom due to divorce, Everyone treated him the same, but as a kid I was puzzled as to why and how it could happen that he didn't have a father due to divorce. We do live in a very different and tragically broken country.

@james colvin The sad part is you are more correct than i think. The youth have been programmed as they are addicted to media, and use it all day every day. The take over is much easier now, give it 20 years it will be complete. The crime is when the youth of today FULLY understand what they gave away, they will want it returned. And THAT will never happen without bloodshed - and maybe not even then. Evil does exist in the world. And it wants power and control. And more and more of each. All of this is right out there to be seen - if you look for it. Social media is a tool. Smart phones are a tool. Young people are used like the tools they are trained to be. Ever try to converse with a 24 yr old ? They know what is right here and right now, but only as much as means anything to THEM. History ? nope no specifics anyway. Sheep for the slaughter. Not all are this way but the majority is, and the take over will be bloodless and silent. With any luck i will not live long enough to see how it turns out.

@@adotintheshark4848 : My wife was a TV actress in her younger days. She got a couple of minor movie parts but told her agent "never again" - movie people muck around too much. What's prized by TV show producers and crew is not skillful acting, but the ability to never forget lines, never break character, and repeatability - the ability to replicate body moves, expression, and speech exactly from one shoot to the next. Nothing frustrates them more when they have to get a weekly show done than one actor forgetting his lines, they cut and reshoot again, and then somebody else forgets his lines or starts laughing - cut and shoot again, and some woman then put her bag down and forgot to pick it up again. TV show people will do 1 to 3 takes while movie people will do 20 or 30 takes. TV is right first time and near enough is good enough, but movie making is keep trying until its perfect. This means the acting in low cost weekly TV shows like this one is much better than you think. Some big-name movie actors were useless for TV.

@@northdakotaham1752 , I had a 1963 Volkswagen bus (van/transporter). It stopped very well on drum brakes because the German engineers used double leading brake shoes. For folks who don't know what that means, instead of one slave (wheel ) cylinder pushing both shoes simultaneously, it had two slaves pushing the shoes from opposite sides, 180* from each other. The side that is pushed is called the leading edge, and when the slave pushes in the direction of the wheel rotation, the spinning drum grabs the leading edge of the shoe and pulls it into the drum surface, increasing the stopping power. So having twin leading shoes give e more friction then one leading and one lagging shoe would.

I tried to find the airline promo on youtube he did to send you the link, but could not locate it. Of all the captains on the 60's Dragnet , he was my favorite, although Art Ballinger and Clark Howat come in a close second. Shout Productions have all 4 years at a great price on DVD of the 60's Dragnet and you can download all the radio shows of Dragnet free at oldtime radio.com Another "soon to be" Dragnet character was William Boyett who can be seen in many of the Highway Patrol episodes. He was in about a dozen 60's Dragnet episodes and then went on to become "Mac" McDonald, the captain on Adam-12. He was a great actor and family man and sadly passed away a few years ago

I'm gonna check IMDB for Bill Boyett...he may have been around late enough to have walked onto the "NCIS" shows, "Criminal Minds" and the like-he's instantly recognizable. From the post-WW2 cinema noir classics to CHiPS and beyond...he was there!

Yes and a "jerk" and "pervert" made a really rude comment about him being a "typical hard nosed cop" on another Highway Patrol episode if he had been one in real life and was likely a homosexual. Without violating any of Google's policies, I let him have it. He passed away in 2004. I've also looked up Broderick Crawford on Wikipedia and sadly. I wish I hadn't, but it shows we are all human with weaknesses. He evidently had a serious drinking problem and had a handler to keep him off the booze during shooting. Still he managed to get a DUI; hence why many of the shots were on back roads as the Highway Patrol along with their technical supervisor allowed him to drive only then. He had a falling out with the producer over his continued drinking and the show was ultimately cancelled due to his drinking even though it still had high ratings. I wish I hadn't read that, but we are all mortal.

Watching these old episodes triggered a memory of how back in the day you would back up the car while turning around to the right with your right arm draped over the back of the front seat, steering with your left hand and looking through the back window. Dan does this effortlessly on some pretty hairy dirt roads. It takes some coordination and practice to steer with one hand moving in reverse, driving one of those tanks. With headrests and bucket seats, seems like it's impossible to do today even if you just wanted to try it for kicks.

@@miked6335 : Perhaps. All my vehicles since bench seats went have been automatics - T-bar change lever. Another factor that may apply, though I very much doubt it: You obviously live in a left hand drive country as in the USA. I live in Australia, which is a right hand drive country - in my case it is my right hand on the steering wheel and left hand resting on the console (or draped over the seat back in a bench seat car). @desertbob6835

Mark Muffs'58 with the "Flight Pitch Dynaflow" (essentially a fancier version of the Chevy Turboglide) was a REAL mess. It was a '58 Super with that slushbox that got the lowest MPG on the Mobil Economy Run of that year....8.1 MPG...ON THE ROAD! This all came from Al Sloan, chair of GM, who believe that cars should have a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and the divisions' answer was to copy Allison's 1945 "V-drive" slushbox for the GM coaches, five element torque converter and all. Even the V-drives had a "lockup" for direct drive! I think the Chevies with the 348 and Turboglide were about the same on fuel as was the Buick. When the president of Buick Motor Division was queried about the lousy performance of their entry, he joked, "Well...we have to keep the oil companies happy!" He was only half joking. Pontiac,Olds, GMC and Cadillac didn't fall for it and stuck with the Hydra-Matic. A Buick Super in the '50s special ordered with a 3 on the tree was a pretty sprightly performer, indeed...so was the Special.
@hoss73ford
8 жыл бұрын
+DeserT BoB Yes I've heard what a disaster the Flightpitch was but I never cared for '58s and rechrome work on them would cost a small fortune. Parts are long gone for the Flightepitch. Most 58s and early '59s which have survived had them uprooted years ago, so the owners now say. And I almost never see a '57 Chevy at a show with Turboglide or for that matter an original fuel injection. I own all Fords now and they had many things that tanked over the years. I sometimes see one of those old Ford commercials with their slogan "Ford Has a Better Idea". Well........sometimes.
