The dogs camped at Highway to Haven Campground, in Grand Haven, MI.
As far as campgrounds go, this campground is pretty basic. It's a cheap, no frills, place to park your RV. Honestly, I really enjoyed how quiet it was and how large the sites were. Most private campgrounds have tiny sites with no room. We enjoyed our campsite here.
We have 2 kinds of camping trips. The kind where we camp and barely leave the place we're camping, like when we were at Maumee Bay State Park we stayed there the whole weekend. Or, the kind where we just need a place to sleep and spend all our time in nearby towns, such as when we were in Sandusky last year. We only went back to the Sandusky Milan campground to sleep, left in the morning and didn't come back until bedtime.
Due to Beo's age, this was one of our first hybrid camping experiences.
We knew Beo would need frequent rests this weekend. And, we were so comfortable at the campsite we didn't mind hanging out. We built a fire, made some food on our grill, and got to enjoy actual camping while also being close to town. Highway to Haven isn't even 10 mins outside of downtown Grand Haven.
Absolutely would come back. In fact, I recommend skipping the State Park campground here in Grand Haven and booking at Highway to Haven.
Highway to Haven has nice roomy sites. Didn't feel butt up against our neighbors, the dogs had room to walk around. Beo had a tree to pee on. There wasn't a loud band or loud music playing. Our camping neighbors were respectful. If this place was closer to me, I'd consider a permanent or semi permanent spot here.
The no frills approach might be my favorite. No boisterous bingo nights, no loud bands, no noisy golf carts, no giant inflatables filled with screaming kids all day. Most private campgrounds have all those things. I like this one and its quiet.
To be sad for a minute: While we were packing up to leave for this trip was the first time I noticed Beo poo on the floor. He pooed in his stroller this trip too, and then also once in his bed. I put my feet right in the pile of poo Sunday morning. That was "fun." Of course, he wasn't in trouble. I didn't know then that this was a start of a serious problem. The pooing got progressively worse, quickly. Beo has passed away since the filming of this video. He will be missed every second of every day.
from their website:
"One of the standout features of the revamped Highway to Haven is its expansive dog park, catering to four-legged family members and ensuring that every member of the family can enjoy the outdoor experience.
In addition to the dog park, the campground boasts a new community center, serving as a hub for social gatherings and recreational activities. Children can delight in the newly installed playground, while sports enthusiasts can indulge in friendly competitions on the basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts.
While preserving its legacy as a cherished camping destination, Highway to Haven Family Campground has undergone a remarkable evolution, inviting families to create new memories against the backdrop of Grand Haven’s natural beauty. Whether it’s roasting marshmallows around the campfire or engaging in spirited games, the campground offers an idyllic setting for families to connect, unwind, and forge lasting bonds.
Pet Guidelines
Quiet and well-mannered pets are allowed and welcomed at the campground. Any dog that shows aggressive behavior will be required to leave the campground. Limit of 2 dogs per site. Pets must always be on a leash and kept under control. Owners will be notified when excessive barking is occurring. Any dog that has continuous, excessive barking will be required to leave the campground. Pets are not permitted in any building or in the playground/activities area. An off-leash dog park is provided at the front of the campground."
Highly recommend this dog-friendly campground.
