I have no idea who they are talking about 80% of the time, but it's still better than American TV.

joseph galarneau I wonder what you would think if you understood it all. :) I pick and choose from American and British tv. There are shows I like and those I don't on both sides of the Atlantic. Gone are the days of three major networks and PBS in the US. There are now hundreds of choices, both on tv and online, just from the US alone, and probably hundreds of thousands if not more, around the globe accessible via the internet.

I think it's kind of cool of Jacob Rees-Mogg to have come on this show. Even though probably most people there disagreed with him, and he with them, they were all willing to sit down and talk about stuff like a group of human beings. That's beautiful, to me. I don't really agree with Rees-Mogg's views, myself, but he's still a person. I mean, can you imagine Mitch McConnell coming on Bill Maher's show, or something, here in the States? It would be a non-stop shouting match, the whole time. Of course, this episode was also a few years ago, so there is that to consider. But I think it's maybe just something to think about.

Daniel Cropp Not McConnell but other right wingers have had good conversations with Bill Maher, although Maher is infamous for poking guests to get a reaction whereas other late night hosts have respectful conversations and never allow themselves to get overwrought. Being loud is Maher's shtick but he doesn't do it all the time, or allow it all the time with his roundtable of guests. McConnell as Majority Leader wants to protect his position as the person able to keep the flock together and heading in the correct, as the leader sees it, direction. Going on a comedy show is of no help to them. I might suggest that you don't see the PM on this show fielding the insults, questions, and crudities, or anyone currently at the top of the heap, but rather those who want to be there or were there and need to get a job or sell a book, and are willing to take the chance of looking bad for the chance of looking better.

HIGNFY is a good example of how different the conversation culture is in Britain than in the US. In Angus Deayton's era the panelists ridiculed their guests non-stop of many of them kept coming back. I think the Brits are not as afraid of being laughed at. Just my opinion though....

That's because MPs behave like a bunch of commoners in the house of commons. Outside it's a poor show to behave emotionally.

We Americans don't like talking things through because that means listening to people we have already judged to be enemies and dangerous to our way of life. Trump was inevitable. We're almost through our 4-year reprieve, during which I'd have hoped we'd change our way of talking about politics, but nope. We've forgotten our past, so here comes Trump part 2, now with a mandate to rule as an authoritarian.

Jacob mispronounced floccinaucinihilipilification. The third c isn’t hard. Fairly standard Latin to render a c soft if followed by an e or an i.

It's kinda funny... This show was the first time in my life I saw Jacob Rees-Mogg. Haven't seen the full episode, only individual clips. And for the longest time, I thought he was a comedian, making fun of posh, rich English people... The guy is almost a caricature of himself. It's sureal.

BoJo and Mogg could have been successful in entertainment IMO. I might even have been a fan. They might have made considerably more money than their government salaries, and the world might have been better off.

Interesting to observe Josie's innate sense of self-importance compared to her knowledge of the world in general. She truly was a harbinger of the World according to the BBC, although she has to join the back of the line.

It is what is great about this show. Although basically left wing and sane, they actually will listen to and talk to people on the other side. It is wonderful. Polarization of political discussions and news is one the worst aspects of our modern world. He is a bad person in my view for his actions but it is highly worthwhile getting to know him as a person, as much as he is a person

Because they're even-handed. As a Canadian, I appreciate seeing a show where two or more sides of the political spectrum get a chance. It's also a chance for Ian to get in a few jabs, as he does at both lefties and righties and probably centrists when they're hypocritical. Finally, Rees-Mogg is interesting, intelligent and funny. He is also a horrible, cruel, despicable human being and/or politician.
