Hiking The Shoemaker Tunnels, Angeles National Forest, CA.
More than being a dirt road with tunnels, Shoemaker Canyon Road has history. During the Cold War years of the 1950's - 1960's, The Shoemaker Tunnels were constructed as a quick access route over the mountains. The main idea was to provide an evacuation route in the event of nuclear war with Russia. There are many doubts about how well this plan would work in under real life circumstances. Fortunately, we never found out. Meanwhile, the project died in the late 60's and construction was halted. What is left are well made tunnels with nowhere to go. Makes a pretty cool hike, though!
