We stubbornly hike in LUNA Sandals on the Appalachian Trail, but found our feet get too cold in temperatures below about 35° F. Especially when there is snow on the ground and our feet stay wet all day. When we are on trail for multiple days without getting inside to warm up, the only solution we've found are waterproof socks over a wool sock. Since we can't find a split-toe / tabi waterproof sock that works with our LUNA sandals, we've resorted to "sock shoes", which are compatible with "regular" socks. So far we prefer Goat Grip sock shoes since their sole is thick enough to insulate from the ground and keep our foot from getting cold when moving in wet or snowy conditions.
Pros (for us):
- We like the ground feel minimalist footwear provides and our toes can activate and grip the ground through them
- We can tell if we are about to take a "bad" step and adjust before we commit to that step and twist an ankle
- When they get wet from walking in snow, we can easily stuff them in a ziploc bag and put them in our sleeping quilt, so they don't freeze overnight. Harder to do this with shoes or boots
- Our feet stay magically warm in Goat Grips when paired with wool and waterproof socks
- Work with Vargo Pocket Cleats (2.4 oz per pair)
- Also great camp shoes
- Much less expensive than shoes
Cons:
- You have to get used to walking "barefoot" again, which takes some time
- They get hot above about 50° F...we just switch back to LUNAs then
- The fabric takes awhile to dry...but faster than shoes or boots
- People laugh at you (just kidding, we don't care)
