The Metru are only as beloved as they are because of their role in the grander Bonkle narrative and because they had higher articulation than the first three years at the cost of their gimmickry. You know, ignoring that this was the start of the Toa all being the same build with different masks and the story getting too convoluted to follow for its own good…

IMHO the Toa Metru just have the _worst_ version of the turn-a-gear-to-attack gimmick - their upper arms are locked to turning opposite directions, and if you lock 'em in place then the points of articulation start with the elbow! And yeah, it definitely didn't help that the only real differences were the colors, masks, and weapons - but that's an issue that kind of plagued the line as a whole until... Mahri Nui's villain sets, I guess.

As a Toa Metru fan it certainly would be interesting to see you make a video about them (regardless of any slander). I will beforehand say that I think that a lot of interesting things can be done with the Metru build as seen with the winning models of the canon Toa Hagah contest.
@RRSlugger
9 ай бұрын
Indeed! It's interesting to see how the addition of modern parts into the mix can help make up for the Metru's shortcomings out of the box. I remember *at the time* feeling very limited by the Metru style compared to the Mata/Nuva style; it was like an Apple product, a closed system end to end, haha.
@Bionickpunk
9 ай бұрын
@@RRSlugger Not really a closed system when the Metru torso piece had far more unrestricted attachment points for armor, body shaping, or weapons. The innovation of a detachable hip piece did a lot to allow more customization. The Mata/Nuva torso literally was just one giant clump of plastic with axel and pin connections in areas the arms and legs are suppose to move, so you couldnt really attach much without obstructing even more articulation. There just more you could do with a Metru build, and the Hagah are an example of this. Also factor in that 2004 brought nearly all new pieces and colors to the table, a breath of fresh air after 3 stangnant build years with the far more limiting Mata torsos and the Bohrok clone army.
@RRSlugger
9 ай бұрын
@@Bionickpunk I jumped ship fairly quickly, so using only 2004 era pieces, yeah it really felt like an iPod compared to the less restricted systems of Mata Nui. Now, *since* then, I've seen some pretty great MOCs using the Metru system with more modern pieces added to help bolster the limited build variety seen at launch. I think one of the reasons I so dislike the Toa Metru is down to their torso design - the way the arms connect to the body and gear system is just such a massive step backward, in my opinion. Hopefully I'll be able to better illustrate why in the future.

As a Bionicle fan, I do lament the homogenisation of the canister sets after the Toa Mata. The Bohrok were already pretty lazy with them all sharing the exact same build and gear function. The Toa Nuva brought it back a bit, but I feel they were just retaining unique build choices rather than expanding on them. The Toa Metru were the last canister sets I bought the full set of back in the day and only picked up 1 of the Vahki, Toa Hordika and Visorak before losing interest in the line entirely. So yeah, would love to see a video from you on the subject as I too would take a Slizer over a Toa Metru any day.

The interesting thing about the name that SLIZER might be the name, but it was translated from the Throwbot name to Hungarian. The problen was that "bot" like in robot does not have proper translation to Hungarian so the solution was "Hajítóprofi"; the closest mirror translation would be "ThrowPro" as the Pro has a casual representation in Hungarian as "profi". Sooooo best of both worlds I guess.

Amusingly, I was typing out a suggestion for the Roboriders video(s) but you just so happened to say exactly what I would have! I imagine you won't be tackling collecting all... 16 designs... 8 sets... plus TNO in the service pack... 144 (?!) wheel designs, so we'll have to live with just a few examples for each. Looking forward to it!

Oh dear goodness! Then there are the golden wheels that came in combo packs in Germany - so rare that they aren't even listed on Bricklink! 💀

I do seem them listed on Bricklink, interestingly they're unprinted. A few of them appear to have listings for sale, but of course very few and for far too much to sensibly spend.

@@kopakaskoolkompanion Oh interesting! I wonder if they're recent additions to Bricklink; I don't recall seeing them there before. 😮

@@RRSlugger Yeah can't say I've seen them there before, only noticed when I pulled up the wheels to check the colour count just now!

Hey slugger, as a huge fan of the Toa Metru I would absolutely love to see you roasting them, as I know there is plenty to dislike about them XD and I cant wait to see the Roborider videos when they're ready, as a kid browsing the lego magazine, I saw the massive combiners requiring all 6 and dreamed about one day seeing it made. Also have you considered covering Lego Spybotics sometime? it seems like it might be up your street if you like weird technic stuff?

Haha, thanks! That's how I hope folks would react to it - a friendly roast. Everyone likes what they like! 😊 Spybotics is a curious theme to me, but to be honest, the only reason I have covered some of these odd ones like Throwbots/Xalax is because I stumbled into complete collections for very cheap. Roboriders is the same deal - with Spybotics, I don't currently have any of them, but I would certainly talk about them in the future if a similar situation happens to me. 🙂

Oh wow, when I said Bionicle was the reason for rare purple parts, I TOTALLY forgot about Voriki. That is 100% the reason.

I honestly think the move for Robo Riders is to cover all the canister sets on their own first, and then maybe just do highlight video(s) for the various combined sets. Lets you put out some content soonish and then some content Eventually, taking any sort of time requirement completely off the combined video. I mean heck, you could even break it into smaller videos - All the 2 rider combos, all the 3, all the 4, and so on... I don't think anyone would mind being drip fed 3-5 minute doses of Slug Juice every now and again for a while. Which uhhh, is what you said! 😊

I like this idea, yeah! I'll probably take a break from Technic for a while - I miss my System sets! 😭 When I do come back to Roboriders, I'll consider taking this approach!
