McConnells Mill State Park, located in Lawrence County, PA, not far from the OH-PA border, is an excellent spot for Northeast Ohioans (and Western Pennsylvanians!) to take a day trip. The trails at McConnells Mill take hikers along Slippery Rock Creek and through the rugged surroundings that make up Slippery Rock Gorge. The trails featured in this video range from moderate to difficult, with frequent changes in elevation and rocky, root-filled terrain. Hikers will encounter beautiful views of the gorge and river, multiple waterfalls, McConnells Mill and dam, and a covered bridge, all of which makes for a rewarding journey.
The hike depicted in this video begins at the Alpha Pass Trailhead and takes the Alpha Pass trail (1.5 miles) south, to the area where McConnells Mill and the covered bridge are located. After crossing the covered bridge, the hike takes the Slippery Rock Gorge trail (6.2 miles) south and west to the Hells Hollow area, and ends with a quick jaunt down Hells Hollow trail (0.5 miles) to Hells Hollow Falls.
The park also features the 3 mile Kildoo trail, which is not depicted in this video.
NOTE: Portions of the Alpha Pass and Slippery Rock Gorge trails are part of the 4,600 mile long North Country Trail, which begins in the Adirondaks in New York state, and runs through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota.
