It's short, but we always do the Whispering Pines trail.

Probably Summer Grapes. Normally, Fox Grapes are a about the size of a table grape by fall, but more rounded with a sweet center, a few seeds, and bitter skin. Then, Frost Grapes, after the frost, become sweeter. You indicated they were bitter. That kind of leaves Summer Grape and Moonseed. Moonseed is not a grape, but looks like one, but it does have a single seed, and the seed is shaped like a crescent moon. Also, since you are not sick or dead, because Moonseed is highly toxic to humans if ingested, they were probably Summer Grapes by elimination. Otherwise, you have to do what Stephanie Pucci said.

Unfortunately there were no leaves to see as it was late fall already. The seed I spit out was rounded and not crescent shaped. I didn't swallow any of the grape, usually when something tastes bitter its often toxic.

In order to identify the type of grapes you need to identify the leaf. There is a grape that grows from roots but they are weeds and poison

It was late fall, so no leaves were around to identify.

If there were vines overhead, they were likely grapes. If not, could they be from the wichhazel tree?
