Great video!! Sure makes me want to get back into hiking... I had to stop a number of years ago due to a knee problem, that's finally been resolved, so I've no excuse to keep sitting on my rump. Also glad to find this video as I just ordered a UV9D Mate ( Black Friday sale), and it confirms that my decision to buy one was a good move. I like the Air band receive capability, as I'm in somewhat close proximity to couple of general aviation airports and an ATC center for a major commercial airport and like to monitor the activity.

NOW THAT'S A REVIEW!!! Thanks very much for doing this and showing us the KG-UV9D Mate in action!! I have no mountains here and can't get 5000 ft. up but Mine gets out there quite a ways also! Have a great day and keep up the good work!!!

Love the hiking video. I’m headed to the the black hills in South Dakota in a few weeks. Might try making some simplex contacts from Mt Rushmore or something. Approx what distance was your contact?

That sounds awesome to do good luck with that. I think that contact was probably 35 mi or so.

Very nice hike and contact. What Nagoya antenna are you using?
@northmanproject4007

That is the Nagoya 701 I believe for that radio it's the SMA male connection.

And thank you for the comment I appreciate it. I contacted Nagoya and I asked them if they would consider making a SMA mail in the nagoya 24J antenna. They currently don't have one. But the 771 and the 701 are both excellent antennas as well.

@@jimcorbin6905 ahh right on. I'm glad I could help. Like I've said before the only real complaints I have it the display in direct sunlight is hard to see plus the FM radio access ability could be easier. But over all I love this radio! Excellent value. Even the stock antenna does well. Thanks again for the comments! Much appreciated

Does this radio transmit on gmrs channels and repeaters or only listen to gmrs channels?? Thank you

Out-of-the-box it will only transmitted on ham bands. You can look up the specs and see the receive ranges. You can mod it through software but you have to really go through a ridiculous process it's not really worth it. In my opinion. This is still one of my favorite radios. It's pretty much my EDC

No, it isn't. But I will say this thing is excellent. I can't tell the difference. My favorite radio in many ways.

I was wondering if i could ask your opinion. Im kinda new to ham and gmrs i have 2 uv5r's i had help settting up i use to monitor, ham is just much for my schedule to devote alot of time too. So for me gmrs is the way im going, i have 2 young kids and wife that i think would benefit from gmrs radios to use instead of phones. To my questions im looking for 2 radios easy enogh for a 12 yr old to work on their own but not a cheap one and I was thinking about the kg-935g or something similar for me to carry that if needed we could talk and would like your opinion Im a resigned state employee so i understand the need for the shtf plans and have been involved in boots on the ground and liason in the livestock industry. Thats the reason im taking action ive been on both sides of communication scenarios. Thank you for your knowledge!

@@northmanproject4007 yes sir im definitely going to get one of those for me. I was just thinking the g11s, uv9g would be more user-friendly for a 6 and 12 to use thats the part i dont find much info on.
