Gros Morne mountain is the tallest peak within Gros Morne National Park.
This hike is not for the faint of heart. At over 800 meters in elevation gain, or 2,625 feet, this hike will take you the better part of 8 hours to climb. Despite its challenging status, and perhaps the most difficult rated trail in the park, this trail continues to be one of the most popular.
You'll want to arrive early in the day - to both have enough time to complete the trail, as well as getting a parking spot. We arrived around 8:30 am and the parking lot was already starting to fill up.
This trail is a continuous uphill battle. You'll begin heading up, where you will undergo a steady climb for the first hour or two. It's only once you get to the base of the mountain does the trail level out, giving you a chance to catch your breath.
There are several spots and benches along the way that give you a break - and I suggest taking advantage of them. The trail up to the base of the mountain is pretty conventional - dirt and stairs. Once you begin climbing the mountain however, that changes.
Once you begin to ascend the mountain, the terrain changes to rock - loose rock. Some areas the rocks are large enough that you'll need to scramble up - using both your hands and you feet. You'll notice there is a false summit or two, so don't get too excited when you think you are at the top. You aren't.
The views from the top are awesome, but the views of the way down are magical. Luckily this trail is a round trip trail, meaning you won't need to climb the steep rocks on the way down.
