Biokovo - a limestone mountain range that rises from the sea is located in the Dinaric Alps along the Adriatic coast in Croatia. The highest peak Sveti Jure (Saint George) is standing at 1762 m which makes it the second-highest peak in Croatia. The area was declared a nature park in 1981.
Our route starts by bus from Makarska to the Skywalk viewpoint and takes us along the scenic road that winds its way up the mountain. The unique combination of Mediterranean and alpine climates contributes to its diverse ecosystem. Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass platform is located at a height of 1228 meters above the sea and offers an unforgettable panoramic view of Makarska riviera. On windy sunny days there are views of Italy and walking on the transparent glass outside the edge of the cliff allows you to experience the Biokovo rocks from a bird's eye view.
We continue along the road to the mountain lodge under Vošac, from where the hiking tour to the summit at 1422 m starts. There is a mountain lodge at the top, a beautiful stone house that was once a military facility. Despite the very changeable weather, we were rewarded with a view of the Makarska Riviera and the islands of Brač, Hvar, Korčula and Lastovo.
Part of the group then goes to the mountain lodge Pod Jurom, from where the ascent goes sharply uphill to the chapel of St. George. This part of the trail is secured with a rope to hold onto during the ascent.
