Esztergom is a historically significant city on the Danube. In the year 1000, Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian king, was crowned here. An impressive basilica was built here in the 19th century. The famous Ostrihom archdiocese is also located here, which in the past included, except for Hungary, also parts of Slovakia. The city has many attractions, we visited some of them, as well as its natural surroundings.
Our tour led from Vadaš in Štúrovo through Viziváros to the Esztergom basilica. We continued along the outskirts of the city, through forests and meadows above the basilica to Vaskapu menedékház with a truly wonderful view of Esztergom, the Danube and the surrounding hills. On the way back, we also visited the interior and the dome of the basilica, which was already open in the afternoon.
Points of interest on the route:
Mária Valéria Híd - the bridge between the Hungarian Esztergom and the adjacent Slovak Štúrovo, which were separated for 57 years, restored in 2001
Macska út (Cat's Stairs) - a picturesque steep narrow street connecting the "under-castle" with the basilica
István megkoronázása - statue on the hill showing the coronation of Saint Stephen

Szent Anna temetõ - former cemetery for the poorer, now a park
Esztergomi vár - castle from 10th century, in the 12th century one of the centers of Hungary, a collection of medieval bells (46 pieces) from the former territory of Hungary
