The whole thing about bopomofo makes no sense to me by making up a bunch of symbols and assigning sounds to them just to do what pinyin is doing. Don't get me wrong. I grew up learning Traditional Chinese and I hated, and still not a fan of Simplified Chinese. But Pinyin makes much more sense than bopomofo. I believe that they're slowly starting to adopt that now.

Bopomofo is the old system created before the beginning of pinyin in the 50s. You can still find them in dictionaries published in Mainland China. It's like Japanese use hiragana, not Roman characters to type on their phone. After all, it's all about if you want to romanise the language. Pinyin, back in the day, was planned to be the replacement of all characters, because of the prevalent Western-centrism view at the time (漢字不滅中國必亡). There was plan to make Chinese like the current Vietnamese, abandoning all characters.
