Hiked Saturday, September 8, 2024 - Late Summer Adventure
Just off exit 34, the trailhead sits about half a mile past the Garfield Ledges lot. Facilities are open, but don’t forget your Northwest Forest Pass!
The journey kicks off with a scenic 3-mile stretch, where the trail winds alongside the Taylor River through a lush, fern-draped forest that feels straight out of a fairytale. Keep your eyes peeled about 100 feet before the wooden bridge-you’ll spot a cairn marking the start of the unmarked trail to Marten Lake.
Now, here’s where things get fun: it’s steep, rugged, and you’ll be scrambling over downed trees and rocks. You’ll briefly emerge from the forest canopy into an open field, where the trail narrows. Heads up if you’re hiking early-dew-covered leaves will give you an unsolicited morning shower as you pass through.
The lake? Absolutely stunning. And surprisingly, no bug swarms to battle!
Side note: Some hikers mentioned spotting two young bears near Otter Falls, so keep that in mind as you explore.
Feel free to watch the YT video I created for more details.
