Hiking the Grand Canyon Rim-To-Rim Hike was never on my radar until I first hiked it back in 2016. Now that I’ve hiked this one four times now, I can honestly say this is, hands down, still one of my all-time favorite hikes. What’s one of your bucket list hikes? Tell me in the comments below.

I live in Arizona, and have done a few good hikes, but the Grand Canyon would definitely be one I'd like to do one day. If you were to do a one way hike only, where would you start, the North Rim or South Rim?
@TheHungryHiker
3 жыл бұрын
@@rainbowrunner1550 The North Rim is my favorite of the rims. It's also 1,000 feet higher than South Rim. The first year I hiked this one, we only went North to South. The hike up South Rim can get crazy with the crowds and the hike up North Rim is beautiful and grueling. That's a tough one. I guess it depends on where you're heading after your trip. We always fly in and out of Vegas so making North Rim the final destination always makes sense for us.

Well done! Nice video footage too! I've day hiked rim to river to rim two times. The last time was last May. It was supposed to be a North Rim to South Rim day hike but the North Rim was closed due to record snowfall. I had a cabin reserved but my reservations were canceled. I "settled" for another rim to river to rim day hike. I've already made my reservations on the North Rim for 2024 and I'll try it again. On my rim to river to rim hike last month, I came upon several hikers in distress. My hiking buddy and I spent four hours getting a hiker to a ranger at Indian Garden. We found her along the trail collapsed in the sun. Too many people take a cavalier approach to this hike and find themselves in serious trouble. Training, planning, proper nutrition and hydration are vital for a safe and enjoyable hike. Based upon the number of rescues conducted by NPS each year, day hiking is strongly discouraged by NPS. That said, a very fit and well prepared hiker can enjoy a carefully planned journey. Congratulations on completing the PCT through hike!!
@TheHungryHiker
Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! I agree, hiking the rim to rim in one day isn't recommended and I know the NPS doesn't encourage it. If you are prepared for a hike like this in this type of terrain and conditions and have trained properly, you can do a safe hike in and out of the canyon. The key is to be well trained and well prepared!

Thank you! And a tip of the cap to you as well. The Rim to River to Rim is a pretty hefty hike. Did you do that all in one day? Please tell me you treated yourself to a lemonade down at Phantom Ranch. My first trip across the canyon a few years back left me pretty sore for a few days after. Now each year I hike it, the soreness gets less and less. It's like my feet and body remember. My mind craves the experience and will go anywhere my feet can take me.

Very enjoyable to watch. Your videos have just the right amount of silent footage, narrative, & in person talking to keep us engaged. Very well done. Back in the early 80’s my dad took me down the Grand Canyon. We had lunch on the river & hiked out the trail we came down. My 2 most vivid memories - 1) the places on the trail where the livestock pack trains would relieve themselves (they always use the same places every day) & 2) my dad complaining because I went the same speed up as I went down. Your video brought back very fond memories for me - thank you for that

What's the best time to hike here and how are supply points/ water sources? Thank you.
@TheHungryHiker
3 жыл бұрын
I typically do this hike in either September or October. The weather tends to be cooler and there are far less crowds. There are no resupply points along this trail. The only "lodging" on this stretch of trail is Phantom Ranch and you need reservations to stay there. There's a 13-month lottery just to make a reservation. As for water, there are 10 water stops along the way from North Rim to South Rim that don't require water filtering, along with pit toilets. For more detailed information about a previous hike I did back in 2017, check out my blog post here: www.the-hungry-hiker.com/2017/09/14/how-i-survived-hiking-the-grand-canyon-rim-to-rim-to-rim/ For general trail information, I'd recommend checking out the park's website here: www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/upload/intro-bc-hike.pdf Good luck!

This is such an incredible hike - my wife and I just keep coming back to the Canyon, year after year after year, and it never gets old. Best advice: TAKE YOUR TIME. Stop at every camp along the way and stay overnight. Now you can linger at Ribbon Falls and Roaring Springs. You can poke around Phantom and check out both bridges. You can saunter up to Indian Gardens, drop your pack, make camp, and then walk out to Plateau Point for sunset! Next day, walk up to the rim and gorge yourself on "Rim To Rim Swag" at the gift shop! The biggest mistake that we made, the first time we did this - aside from failing to realize the importance of adding "Gookinaide" to our water bottles - was to omit Cottonwood and Indian Gardens from our itinerary. Thanks for sharing your experience! Very helpful and informative! Question: my friends and I want to hike rim to rim, but we could only find lodging on the south side. Is it possible to start on the south, hike to the north and camp somewhere, and then hike back to the south the next day? An alternative plan was one group drives to the north to begin from there (4 hour drive), while another group starts earlier on the south rim heading to the north. As we cross paths, we would exchange keys, so that each group will only do rim to rim. Of course the group ending on the north side will have to drive back out to our airbnb near the south rim.

There's also a shuttle service that takes people from the North Rim to the South Rim and vice versa. It's the same shuttle service I mention in the video. This might be an option for your trip. As for camping down in the canyon, you will need a backcountry permit for that so be sure to check in with the ranger and get the right permits if you decide to go with the camping option. There is other lodging on the North Rim that is just outside of the park. You'd need a car to get to the cabins and then drive back to the trailhead. We rent a car for this trip every year so we always have transportation to and from the trailhead on the North Rim. Good luck!

The rim-to-rim-to-rim without any nom de guerre. I can tell you I was overly confident in my abilities. I had spent ~12 years in the U.S, Army, but that was 18 years ago. I hiked with my adult daughter and soon realized the intervening years had taken their toll. Enjoy it while you are young. If I had any advice it would be to eat more calories than you think is necessary and carry less weight than you think is possible. Adopt the mentality of an Infantryman and be nasty as every ounce of added weight is misery. Carry only the essential personal items and realize you will be dirty, tired and sore. Embrace the suck and enjoy the amazing life changing experience. Look out for the mule puddles.

I've hiked the Rim-To-Rim-To-Rim trail several times now and this is all pretty solid advice. The canyon respects no one. Plan, prepare and train both mentally and physically for this one.

What is the reason, so many people died in canyon. As there are sign boards everywhere.
@TheHungryHiker
3 жыл бұрын
There are many different reasons why people have died in the canyon over the years. I actually bought a book about it. The reasons for the signs on South Rim is because a lot of people don’t realize the further they hike down, the further they have to hike up. Some hike down and are completely unprepared with not having enough water, proper footwear or just don’t have a clue what hiking down into the canyon entails. The signs are for those people.

I heard water is pretty scarces on the rim to rim? How did that go? (Loved the narration by the way :p )

Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the narration. Surprisingly there is PLENTY of water throughout the canyon along the Rim-To-Rim hike. There are 10 water stops from North Kaibab Trail to the Bright Angel Trailhead on the South Rim. There are no water stops along the South Kaibab Trail. There is a 12-13 mid stretch from the Cottonwood campground to Phantom Ranch where there isn't a water stop, but if you bring a filter, you can filter water from the creek running through the Box. The water stops are turned off for the season sometime in October and don't get turned on again until late Spring. Hope that helps!

Prior to arriving at the GC, and on the day you arrive, check their website, check the signs (pieces of paper taped to the sign posts at the trail heads), ask at the Phantom Ranch/Mule registration desk located inside the Bright Angel Lodge, and ask hikers that you see coming up out of the trail heads with a lot of red dirt on their shoes and legs. That's the best way to know first hand, what the water situation CURRENTLY is. Leaving from the North Rim trail head, there is a water spigot right there (along with pit toilets in the parking lot). 2.25mi down, is the Supai Rest and Supai Tunnel (pronounced "soup-pie") where you'll find another water spigot, and pit toilets. At about 4mi down, there's Roaring Springs, located off trail, and if you have a filter, light stick, or pills, you can take water from the creek that begins there. In another mile, at 5ish miles down, you'll find Manzanita Rest Stop. Water spigot and toilets. From Manzanita all the way to the Colorado River, you'll be hiking alongside the Bright Angel Creek, so plenty of opportunity for water, dipping your hat or shirt, soaking your body or feet, etc. In 2 more miles, you'll be at the 7.5mi down mark, and be at Cottonwood Campground. Again, a water spigot, and pit toilets. The distance from Cottonwood to Phantom Ranch is 7.5mi. There are no toilets or potable water during this distance, but again, you are alongside the creek. At Phantom, you are 14.5mi down from the North Rim, and again, there is a spigot right in front of the Phantom Ranch Cantina, and 1/4mi further toward the Colorado, you'll find Bright Angel Campground, with actual flush toilets and more running water. Stock up on water at Phantom, because the next water source is on the Bright Angel Trail, at Indian Garden, about 4mi from Phantom, and a monster of a climb up Devil's Corkscrew. After Indian, there are 2 more rest stops, 1.5mi apart, with running water and pit toilets, along with shade houses (3mi house, and 1.5mi house). Do your research about hydration drink mixes, and you might even decide to carry a couple different brands. Look at amounts of Potasium and Magnesium, because these 2 minerals are essential to muscle function. Amounts of Vitamin B's are also really important for energy. Nuun, Liquid I.V., Genius Electrolytes, Tailwind, Cytomax, etc. are all good. Don't worry about calories and sugar amounts, because you need both during adventures like this...so get all you can. I started backpacking at the GC in 2007, and switched to running R2R there every year, in 2015. May, and Mid-Aug to Mid-0ct are great months for being down inside the canyon.

@@austinado16 Yup! This is a VERY accurate description of where all the water spigots are throughout the R2R2R hike. I completely agree - check the parks's website AND the board at the trailhead before starting your hike to see which of the spigots are operating and which ones are out. When we were here in October, the first water spigot, Supai Tunnel was out of order due to a broken pipe. Always do your own research before doing any hike, especially for a strenuous trail like the canyon.

Hey token. Tell us about your training to prepare for this distance and EG. And what was in your pack. I assuming just a day pack. That's a lot of miles in 2 days in steep terrain. It has to take special planning. Tell us your story.

Great questions! I'll be putting together a video on the gear I carried with me in my pack for this trip as well as a video on the food I brought. Stay tuned for those. As for training, I've found for me the best way to train for a hike is to hike. Hiking Section L by myself was part of my training for the canyon this year. Lots of elevation gain and descent. I'd say cardio, cardio, cardio and lots of hiking trails with a decent amount of elevation gain and loss. I've been getting a lot of questions on how I prepared for this trip, so I'l be putting together a post on my blog talking about all of the details. Stay tuned. Lots more details to come. The Grand Canyon story is over yet!

I enjoyed the video. I just completed the Rim to Rim to Rim last month (check out my video). I like your strategy of staying on the rims so you don't need a permit. Ever try the South Kaibab route? Did you carry all your food both ways? Did you find food on the rims? I don't like the heat so October/November is my time. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! I checked out your video of the canyon as well - awesome! It is on my bucket list to camp down in the canyon one of these days. My goal was to do it in 2020, but COVID happened and forced me to make other plans. I very much want to hike down South Kaibab. I hear the sunrises are epic there, which is a big motivator for me to hike that trail. I was considering going down that way in 2020, but the shuttle wasn't running and it would've added an additional three miles on top of the 25 I had to hike that day. I'll check it out once the shuttle starts running again. I did carry my food both ways - LOTS of snacks and yes, there was plenty of food on both North Rim and South Rim. My to-go steak dinner on the South Rim was delicious and well deserved!

We took pack mules and donkeys down. Got lost in a ghost town and accidentally locked into an old jail cell. We had to use our socks and shoes to create a lasso to get the keys off the hook.

Interesting. Then way I have no desire t experience the canyon is by riding a pack mule and/or donkey. Both the mules and the people riding them always look so miserable. I'd rather be on my own two feet, walking at my own pace.
