Nothing short of amazing. She even keeps her arms and fingers stiff in "rigormortis" as her body is carried off. The woman thought of EVERY aspect of her characters in a way very few ever have.

I adored everything the woman sang and had the honor of hearing her sing live many times. She was thoroughly committed to every role she sang be it the Elektra of Strauss or Mozart's Electra. The artistry from one such as Hildegard Behrens is deeply missed and utterly incomparable..

When I sing this aria, and let me tell you, it's so much fun to sing, I always think of this performance. The best part is the very last line- the emphasis she puts on that... Such beautifully powerful music, what intense orchestration, shakes you to your core...

The most impressive Elettra on stage I have seen (on video, of course, because I couldn't - unfortunately - have heard her live). Behrens was certainly one of the great legends of the Post War period, though she wasn't as reknown as she deserved with that amazing voice (though not the most powerful), animal stage presence and a powerful sense of femininity and sensitivity even in the most dramatic and tragic roles. She'll be remembered as a great diva in a very broad range of repertoires.

It's funny, I have heard people put this performance down, but I find it riveting. Her voice is strong, bright, and angular...and there is a long tradition of casting Electra with a Wagnerian singer. She gets tired towards the end, and what soprano doesn't?

The finest D'Oreste, d'Ajace I've ever seen, hideous staccati and all. Behrens has scarily become the character, and creates an aura of hysteria and desperation that is unmatched in any performance I've seen. The vocalism is far from perfect; one must go to Julia Varady on the Böhm recording for the perfect balance of hysteria and Mozartean style in this role. But such is Behrens' superlative theatricality that all is forgiven. It boggles the mind that this aria was cut at the Munich premiere, as Act III was deemed to be too long.

Jason Hurd The lack of perfection is what makes it great. I saw this production with this cast. The audience reaction was never any less than here. Ultimately the audience is who matters, and the audience, and this member of it, loved it.

I saw Behrens many times in most of her greatest roles. Extraordinary artist, she became the characters she played in both words and music. But of course one has to be realistic - she never worked out the gear-changing in her registers, and the rasping in mid-range was always an impediment. But it was a small price to pay for her singular artistry.

@@arnoldamaral7406 I live in Covent Garden, 2 minutes from the house. I also have a place in Sussex. My first opera was also Boheme with Cortrubas and Jose Carreras, so not a bad start. At the Met there was this, Barber of Seville with Kathleen Battle and Rothwell Blake, gosh, what else? Probably best of all the Centennial Gala. Hours of wonderful singing. Montserrat and Jose singing the finale from Andrea Chenier, Elizabeth Soderstrom, Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Stade with the great Rosenkavalier trio, the lovely septet from the end of act 1, I think, of L'Italiana in Algeri with Diane Kesling, Ara Berbarian and I can't remember who else. Wonderful days that have ended.
