This won't be a comprehensive list of locations this week, as 1) I have no idea where some of these places deep in the jungle actually were as we had no phone service, 2) some of the places in town don't have map pins, and 3) I'd like to protect the privacy and security of the communities we visited. However here are a few pins from the town itself, as well as details of Children of the Forest. 1) Sangkhlaburi Morning Market: maps.app.goo.gl/PkjXqM8t7nmgoMvJ9 (the khanom jeen place is up the hill a couple hundred meters, and both the Mon Hang Le restaurant and the place serving Ohn No Khao Soi are along the same road, past the market around the bend. None of those have map pins). 2) Zhou (congee or jok) restaurant: maps.app.goo.gl/mpdu4ooEQvQr86fW7 3) Sangkhlaburi Night Market: maps.app.goo.gl/bt5qu6mCFAcSPmyN8 4) The place in Kanchanaburi where we stopped for lunch (first restaurant in the video): maps.app.goo.gl/mMpafWCCY1wHLe4r8 And most importantly- Children of the Forest. They really need the support, any help you can provide (financial or donations of clothes or anything else) very much appreciated. Here's their information: www.childrenoftheforest.org Thanks for sitting through such a long video! We won't have a new one next week (no time, this one took extra production time as you might expect) or the week after (Daria and I are off to Vientiane, along with our good friends, for a much-needed break and some fantastic Lao food). Can't wait to get back to work soon. Cheers all.

I was a Karen refugee. I grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand from age 3 to 13. I now live in Texas. I was one of those stateless children. Living in a refugee camp was so isolating. I didn't have the opportunity to eat all the ethnic food from Burma. That's something I want to do when the country is stable. In the meantime, I am just watching videos on KZitem like this one. It's comforting.

I am now retired in Thailand. I had visited Myanmar twice before the military coup occured. The economy during the democratic government was on the up swing- especially with tourism. It is a beautiful country due to mass tourism (like in Thailand) not ruining the special attractions. I hope you're saving your money for a holiday there. Someday the junta will be gone.

Idk if this would be helpful and sorry if it’s Annoying, but just a small point. Many people don’t know that the mon group that founded dhvaravadi haven’t yet disappeared in language and culture, but in small villages clustered in western Isaan there’s the nyah kur people, who still speaks a langauge virtually identical to dhavaravadi and is culturally very much Mon! There are only 4000-6000 speakers left but it’s incredible they still exists at all.

I like khanom chin (well, sort of) and I love bún chả, so I’ve always wondered why we don’t have our own version of the noodles here in Indonesia (we got something that has a similar look but actually originated from Indian idiyappam). Well, it makes sense that we don’t, because we never got that Mon influence. Thank you for taking us along on such an eye-opening journey. I’ve never been to Sangkhlaburi, but I’ve been to Kanchanaburi for the bridge over the River Kwai, and what I remember from the trip was that although it was nice that the conscripted workers of European origins had their proper burials and their descendants are able to visit their graves, the same things don’t apply to their Southeast Asian counterparts. They remain unnamed, unidentified, forgotten: people who were taken away from their family and homeland by force and died a lonely death in a foreign land. Sadly, seeing the refugees, the stateless and other displaced people in this video reminds me that not a lot has changed since then. Not only in Sangkhlaburi, but elsewhere all over the world. Thank you for all the good samaritans who’re dedicating their time, money, and energy to help their fellow human beings. Dammit, OTR! I just wanted to see some khao soi and Dalaito’s a-nyar thoke, not a reminder to check my privileges or of what a cruel world we live in! 😭

Thank you for making such a well researched documentary. Watching this was a bittersweet experience. It was sad to see what someone's greed and hunger for power has done to these people. On the other hand, it was uplifting to see how they have not given up and keep striving to survive and make things better for their children. It never ceases to amaze me how people who have little are often so generous and hospitable. Maybe being in a situation where materialism isn't really possible shifts their focus to valuing people instead of material things and power.

Karenni people have a unique identity with their own languages, traditions, and history. Like many other ethnic groups in Myanmar, Karenni people had faced challenges, such as attacks and displacement from their homeland in Kayah state. Kayah state is one of the least developed areas in the country of Myanmar. Many Karenni people seeking safety have found refuge in places like Thailand, where there's a Karenni refugee camp in Mae Hong Son. Despite the limited resources, Karenni people find ways to make each day fun and interesting, engaging in activities like soccer, volleyball, chilo, and Karenni Jump Rope. The culture is something special and deserves recognition. It would be wonderful if there were people like documentary filmmakers who could help shed light on the Karenni people and their rich heritage.

well comprehensive documentary! Not just about food, but now you look deep into the past history of people and culture. With a focus of marginalized people, it's true that refugee, stateless, and migrants are part of Thai country, but they lack of status and rights. As long as the violence in Myanmar persists, they will keep coming to Thailand. That's the reason Thailand will find it's difficult to cope with this situation, but I still believe there will be a way to absorb these people, maybe by next genreation, to become Thais.

Thank you for this video, it is very emotional to watch but also very beautifully and thoughtfully presented, as usual. What strikes me is that despite the circumstances these displaced people find themselves in, their sense of community and culture seems to hold them together against the odds and with Children of the Forrest, who are a godsend, they are doing an incredible job of educating them and bringing them out of statelessness. You mention Anthony Bourdain, in my opinion you folks have picked up his torch, as I see it, to bring the world together with food as it truly does connect all people. Your love of food and history is on another level, right up there with Bourdain, maybe even surpassing him, no one I have seen on KZitem compares in your attention to detail and love of what you do. Production values surpass the majority of channels including extremely well funded ones, the difference is your passion, no one can fake that or produce their way around it. I have been subscribed to your channel since I saw you with Gary Butler, one of my go to guys and I love that you gave a shoutout to Bangkok Pat, another of my favorite channels. I remember seeing that episode with Matthew Kelly when it first "aired" and now Kingfish an the SF Bay post hippie scene is connected to dirt roads on the edge of the eternal war zone that is Myanmar and the people fleeing it to find refuge in Thailand (which ignores and mistreats them as is their habit with refugees). Really wonderful long vid and I hope this spawns more interest and tourism to the area as well as money for the CotRF.

In Viet, it's called chao and man are there lots of types of chao. Not only in the base way of making it but also in the various acompanying proteins and ways of prep. I’ve long enjoyed your channel because my wife and very much like the way you cover history and Thai cuisine, but this story really hit me in the heart…and in the pocketbook, I guess, because I also sent a donation to Children of the Forest. What a heartwarming story. Thank you for sharing that episode with us. It was a real feel good and taste good documentary!
