Would suggest reading all scriptures from Geeta Press as they are true to the original text.. I don’t read anything form ISKCON as the texts are manipulated according to their ideology.. Important to read sacred texts in their true form
@GovindaDevDas-Vision-Darshana
2 күн бұрын
Not sure about Gita press but ISKCON books are just the Gaudiya Vaishnava Siddhanta according to the achintya bheda abheda philosophical tradition. Unless you are a Sanskrit scholar and have simultaneously a traditional insight in some parampara not sure what you would be doing with the original texts.
@RajA-uj1iq
Күн бұрын
@@GovindaDevDas-Vision-Darshana It is good to read regional language translations rather than English.. Gita press publishes in major regional languages ..I have nothing against ISCkon but prefer to make my own mind on what to follow hence reading original texts.. BTW I come from a Dvaita sampradaya but find the interpretation of ISKCOn quite rigid .. have also trained in spoken Sanskrit so reading a regional language translation has been very useful in my spiritual studies..

Vedas/Brahmasutras give us the highest truth but in very cryptic format - upanishads explain them a bit with stories but still it’s very philosophical- the Bhagavad Gita is a simpler and condensed version of these philosophies from the Upanishads - but to make it even more relatable, the ithihaasas show how someone can live by these teachings and the puranas add more color and simplicity to them with many more stories . So it makes sense that the order we go about is the reverse order of this :) great explanation and references Janani.

Glad to come across this video & also, thank you for sharing the link to Puranams. (Unsolicited Sharing)Based on what I have learnt, Shrütis & Smrütis are primarily placed in a hierarchy the way they're because of two factors mainly - i) Shrütis aka the Vedäs are instrumental only when it is learnt by means of focused hearing & recitation ii) Smrütis are records of observation & thesis by those who attained Siddhi in Vedäs. That's why 18 Smrütis Now, coming to Upanishads & other various Sutras that are based on Upanishads - Upanishad is one of the primary blocks of the anatomy of the Vedäs. Others being Aranyakä, Brahmanä & Samhitaa. These blocks can be understood through the tools of Vedäs, which are Siksha, Vyakārana, Chhandä, etc. Next, "Puranam" as mentioned in the Srimad Bhagavatam, was defined by Maharïshi Suta to his disciples. Only when a compendium of historical records is encrypted & comprised of 10 certain qualities(Sarga, Vamsa, Visarga, etc.)... it be referred to as a Puranam. The largest & most complex Puranam is the Skandä Puranam. One should give it a read if capable enough. Finally, Bhagavad Gīta, although, is held more important & renowned than Mahabharatam... but shouldn't be read separately from the Itihasa itself. For complete understanding, one should start with Shri Rāmaayanam...yep! The core essence started where Rāmä, Lakshmanä & Shatrughna/Bharatä were attending a spiritual discourse from their Guru. Here, Rāmä is also told about the future event of Dvaaparä Yugä, where an avatārä will impart this same knowledge in its entirety to a certain special warrior. Additionally, Ishvarä Gīta, Uddhavä Gīta, Rudrä Gīta & a few others are equally important for its role in human well-being. Finally, for the Itihasas like Shri Rāmaayanam & Mahābharatam, their names themselves speak louder than my mere words.

So far I’ve read Ramayan (twice), Shiv Purana (once), BG (several times). Next time I am in India I will buy Vishnu Purana and Srimad Bhagvatam. Besides Hindu scriptures I also found these other very helpful - namely, Razors Edge, Siddhartha, Power of Mythology (recordings of Bill Moyer interview of Joseph Campbell), and Heinrich Zimmermans Indian Philosophies of life. The last book was a time bomb. It became scary esp., with the metaphor of boat and an oar and crossing of river and you turn back, there is no river, or boat all an illusion. Another scary book was History of Occult by Annie Beasant. I had to leave that one as I couldn’t sleep. Anyways, the journey continues…..

I would like to highlight that this video is amazing for building your general understanding of Sanatana, but after you pick a specific philosophy that resonates with you, follow the Siddhanta's canon. For example, if you're following Advaita Vedanta, it isn't valuable to read Puranas like the Padma Purana, which contradict and also attack Shankaracharya's philosophy. However, it is always great to understand what each text brings to the table.

Sanatan dharm is not a religion. Religion has 1 book, we have libraries
@muraliraman9724

sanathan dharma is ....sanathan means (time immemorial, or eternal )..... and dharma in sanskrt means(duty and strict adherence to the duty....... So adhering to one's eternal duty as prescribed since time immemorial by rishis(clements) is sanathan dharma..... To start with such adherence one has to start somewhere.... step 1...one has to read the vedaas(ved finds origin in the word VITH in sanskrt etymology) . vedaas are also called as Srutis(which means श्रुति as heard and listened. vedas are also called as" APHOURUSHEYAM " which refers one that is not written or dictated by anyone but the one that exist forever, neither created, so nor will be destroyed).. To start learing those vedaas aka sruti one has to wear (get initiated) the janeu(saced thread) thro his father or grandfather(who in turn wud have got his vith initiated from his forefathers......its goes on in retro like this...In all the first 3 yugaas...both men & women(XX & XY Chromosomes) were initiated into this vedic aka knowledege learning or training) learning thro a set of rituals...but from the start of kali yug(the present yug).... women are barred from reciting vedic hymns(there's a reason behind it...i dont want to stoke a controversy here) as per the same sanaathan rules set by holy rishis seer or clements since time immemorial)........... Anyone can read gita (a garland of song like hymns hence the name).......u can get a general idea of what SD is all about......But SD is mostly about adhering to (or i will say soaking into) a very strict single focussed way of dwelling in the eternal bliss of the breath or pranaas, that we all are....But frankly from my experience ...its just not possible in this ULTRA MODERN world...... but v all can make a theoritical attempt about knowing who we all are in metaphysically.......anyway...good start ........

Wonderful. Only wish that Indians wouldn't pronounce our Sanskrit words ending in "a" as "aa". For example, pronouncing "Puraana" as "Puraanaa". It's understandable when people of other languages do it but not Indians who've grown up hearing these words spoken often, and may also have read them in Sanskrit, Hindi, or other regional languages. Just a pet peeve of mine, i suppose. Apologies in advance for any feathers ruffled.😂
