usually in Zermatt you have way more pistes open in summer, its also much higher, early in summer you can even go down to Trockner Steg. I've seen Hintertux in August being very sad, its like water skiing

Probably I always came in the wrong time. Each time I visited Zermatt in the summer (June-July), only the very top two flat lifts were running. And the best you could do was take touring skis. So that is where my comment came from... Seems I ll have to try again with better planning. : )

How much does it cost for a day pass?

I think it is between 60-65 Euros for an Adult for 1day, starting at 8AM. If you start later, with each hour I believe the price drops a bit more. You can check it out here: www.hintertuxergletscher.at/en/tickets-rates/tickets-rates/rates-hintertux-glacier/

Hi Jan, i recognize your voice from generation snow! I am curious about visiting this summer, i am not familiar with the European trail classifications. Are the runs here considered intermediate or only expert runs?

Hey there! If you look at this map at: 02:54 The blues are easy, red are intermediate, and black are advanced. I am purposefully not tying it to American colors. Both coloring, but also grading are different. And if you are from the East Coast, then the intermediate and advanced in Europe will be steeper than the one over here. To get an idea: 03:15 - here I am skiing the blue (9A) trail on the map, pretty mellow 04:51 - here I am skiing the blue (9) and it connects to the red (3) 09:34 - this is the red (5) - the top part here would probably be considered black on the east coast. As you can see my wife is sort of early intermediate. She normally skis better than this but I think the thinner air made her tired and the soft snow was not that easy for her either. But overall she was able to handle both the steeps and the varying conditions. I would not consider these trails expert, I think what you will find is that some runs are a bit steeper, but there is always mellow way down as well. Some areas are flat transitions. A few things to be aware of: - the sun hits the slopes hard. I would recommend starting early and go first to (viewers) right side of the mountain that faces the sun early and gets slushy soon. - the left upper side is in shade and lasts a bit longer. - you can rent skis at the top BETWEEN the second and third gondola, so no need to haul any gear up the mountain. They have decent selection, and each time i rented it was in great shape. - the last three times the conditions were very different, once the mountain was completely covered in snow, and the lifts on the far right were opened as well. The next time, the mountain could barely opened as there was almost no snow. And this last time only the upper part was fully opened, and if you look at the end of the video ... they were covering the bottom with some white plastic, perhaps protecting the snow. Not sure. My point ... how many lifts are running, and how many trails are opened varies a lot recently. So just fyi. - for weather, it is best to use their local apps. We used this: www.bergfex.com/hintertux/wetter/berg/ -- but you can really only trust it about 3 days ahead. its big mountains. : ) - you can actually camp in the parking lot. I am not sure if it is officially allowed, or just tolerated, but ever since my teens when we used to go there and camp, till today, I see peoples camper vans, or even tents. We booked a van last year to drive around europe/alps. It is actually very easy to find spots to sleep anywhere. if you have any questions before going, shoot me an email. I think it is in the "bio". 🙏

@@jl4921 Thank you Jan for taking the time to leave me such a detailed explanation! You pretty much summed up all my questions and concerns. Hopefully we both will encounter much snow wherever we choose to visit.🙂

i was in tux as well in july, same crowds in the morning and the pistes destroyed within a hour by all the ski teams, can not recommend going here as a recreational trip in the summer.
