all this is great info to share, I am the tech support for Segway and I get these questions every day. one correction however. Tire pressure should always, regardless of weight should be between 45 - 50 psi. Other then that, all great information and 100% accurate.

John, since you are a tech, is it possible to disengage or "free-up" the steering mechanism? When I "get on" my Ninebot, I step on the mat with my LEFT foot first (as shown in diagram of the Users Manual, 8. Learning to Ride, 2. and 3.). Sometimes, when I attempt to get on the mat/platform, it will "jump-out" or lurch (very quickly) if I contact the steering column, even slightly, with my left thigh, during my attempt to place my right foot on the mat/platform. On several occasions, I've had to just let go (and save myself! lol) of my Ninebot instead of trying to control it. Thanks (ha! ha!)

Duane, you want to make sure the bead it properly set. Make sure your tires are inflated to 45 - 50 psi. If they are and you are still having issues then try checking with soapy water to see if you can find a leak in the tire and tire stem. Segway is currently treating all tire issues regardless of cause as warranty issues and will replace for the end user at no cost to them.

Unlike this video, Segway recommends always keeping the batteries fully charged, even for storage. They also say it should be charged after each use! That's not what I have heard here and elsewhere about lithium ion batteries. I contacted support and they confirmed this to me. Which is more correct? Are there two schools of thought?
@johnerwin6757

The Segway PT batteries recommend that the PT be plugged in 24/7 to assure that the battery(s) are not discharged while the machine is in standby mode. We state this due to the machine is constantly drawing power from one of the batteries looking for the signal from the key fob. If you go to long in stand by and the machine is not charged (typically 45 days per battery from a full charge state) you can drain the battery to the point of nonrecovery and then the machine will switch to the other battery. After 90 days of not charging you can drain both batteries to the point of needing replacement. The miniPRO, however, draws less power while in stand by and as such can go longer without charging. For this reason the miniPRO is not required to be plugged in 24/7 as with the PT. With that said, please dont let it sit too long between charges (again, no longer than 45 days from a full charge state) before you attempt to charge again.

Also a great tip is to put on some black tape on the front of the mini pro, just above the battery indicator so the front light will stay on all the time. Very helpful.

I know what causes one to lose a hubcap. Keep the fire pressure consistently full. When the air gets low, the rim flexes just enough to pop them off. It can also crack them. Once that happens, you get a creaky noise a lot of the time you ride. I ultimately took mine completely off after finding out the hard way.

Awesome overview with some great tips. I'm going to dissent on the 45psi. I use my No9 because I have bad knees and can't take the shock. I have 170 miles on my 'bot with no visible wear on the tires and I run mine at 25-30# for both shock absorption and grip. Also less likely to pop from small sharp items.

Interesting thing to note... The chemical reaction during charging of lithium batteries is actually endothermic. Unless they are excessively hot (indicating a different problem) there should really be no reason to let them col before charging. :)

Great stuff. One of my concerns is how to lock it up securely, like a bicycle, when you get to your destination - supermarket, work, public event - do you see a way that a good bicycle lock could be attached? (Even if you have to take the control arm with you, like a good bicycle seat). Another question; do you see a way to make the equivalent of a bicycle basket or small glove box? Even something small enough to hold a baseball glove and ball would be useful. Thanks for posting what you have learned. I am disabled and cannot walk more than a few feet. I am hoping that this model (or the next?) could be a viable means of transportation, and not merely for recreation.

Ditto for myself Ron. I am very much a novis at riding and I have to say, be very cautious. I am 58 years young and too disabled to be picking myself up off the ground, so always wear a helmet and take it slow because this will hurt you. They tell you on all the documentation. Great information Bob, thank you.

1) Supermarkets have shopping carts so put the Segway in it and go shopping. 2) I hear others did a little mod at the base where you remove the steering stick (control arm). There is a little slot at that base where the Kensington lock T bar(for computer laptops) fits if its enlarged a little. 3) For me if I had to lock it up I would fab a steel plate with the same hole pattern as the underneath wheel mounting bolts. Then on this plate I drill a hole large enough for lock attachment. Make sure it has enough clearance as not to interfere with the ground.

rueban69 The adjustment for height is an ok "hard point" i hang things there occasionally the problem you will have is it throws off the unloaded balance and it may not stay in place anymore. I'm planning to use an under seat bike pack to hold things. They also make a small zipper pouch for canes that uses Velcro and would work wonders.

Everyone is different as are their injuries and needs. I have found that riding the miniPRO has really extended my range, since my back was injured in the military years ago. I can stand for long periods of time, but walking hurts fairly quickly. Riding alleviates that problem. I have taught a man with one leg to ride a miniPRO as long as he uses his prosthetic. @@builtwildnaylor1034 I love the extended bar. About $56 from amazon. The balance can be adjusted somewhat in the ap. You can try a heavy coiled cable lock at the bottom of the post too. A kickstand should take care of the problem. I don't find the balance to be a problem at all. The extended bar is a huge upgrade and far exceeds any negative balance issue.

The hubcap is screwed on the pro, it is the Asian model, the center hubcap snaps on and yea I lost one. Any tips about moving the foam 'knee' support forward? If you ride it right, you will keep bended knees like your skiing, which means the support is no longer is in-between legs but behind them... very irritating...

If you need electrical tape to determine which side of the unit is the front, you are blind, for the miniPro's anterior & posterior are not symmetrical. The front is the side with the battery indicator.

Who are you going to believe? Segway 45-50 psi or tire manufacture 30 psi maximum cold.
@johnerwin6757
7 жыл бұрын
Well since its put out by Segway and has been tested by our engineers at 45 - 50 psi, I would say Seagway. You also have the issue if the tires are under inflated the tire step will hit the chassis. Its your machine however, you do with it as you wish. However, when you call me take complain your machine is making a clicking sound while riding or your tire keeps going flat over time due to the bead not seating, im just going to ask you to fill to the recommended psi to see if this corrects your issue (most likely will btw)
@frankw8876
7 жыл бұрын
You sound like a Segway employee with engineering data. Did not touch the pressure at all from the factory. It does seem like over pressure since all the ware is at the center. I frankly don't like accelerated wear and also those tires are PIA to change and maybe just cost prohibitive. Someone mention its expensive, $200 US per tire? If you need this much pressure why not design a tire for it rather than leaving the user confused? If you worry about clearance, why not have a larger tire or have the platform a little higher. If you need to over inflate the tires against the tire manufacturer's maximum recommended psi for clearance, you have a major design problem. Not touching the tires, but if it fails it's on you! Do you have the engineering data and tire safety certification at this recommended pressure? Are those engineers with training in static and dynamics in mechanics and thermodynamics? Do you know the difference in tire diameters between 30 and 50 psi at STP? Frankly, no respectable engineers will leave themselves or his company open like that. I could see finger pointing between Segway and tire manufacture and happy lawyers. Ironic see how much Segway concern about safety ( limiting the speed, don't do this or that) in the manual and app to CYA but not on this one. This is 40% overpressure, think any car manufacturers could get away with this in a blowout? It is probably safe most of the time, but why expose yourself? Your problem, not mine. What is this clicking sound you were referring about?
@builtwildnaylor1034
7 жыл бұрын
It is a scooter tire. Hence, the rounded profile. Scooters use the rounded profile to turn. Segways appear to use the rounded profile for its lower rolling resistance vs a flat profile tire. Should be three tire pressures listed: What the manufacturer states as max for scooter use, what Segway has tested it at and thereby recommends for use on their device, and what Frank feels. New tires for the segway are $29 at Amazon. It looks like Segway made a few changes to the device so they could raise the max weight from the asian model.

In general this type of battery will have a shorter life if charged above 80% and if it falls below 20%. If you let it discharged completely, you have a door stop; it will take special procedure/power supply to bring it back, not your charger.
@BrianRoediger
7 жыл бұрын
So this is somewhat of a misnomer. Most chargers are programmed to indeed only charge to around 80%. IF Segway rubbed off on Ninebot in anyway, they will be using the same programming as used on their industrial-type Segway PT i2's; incredible power management on the charger.

The battery pack appears to be a 15S configuration using 18650 lion batteries, which means it should have a max voltage rating of 63 volts. However, you’ll notice that they only charge it up to 59.5 volts, which is another 90 to 95 percent capacity. I’m sure they do this to increase battery life by double. And you have a consistent battery performance through out most of its life. It should be able to get 1000 charges from the pack.
