That's my ONLY gripe about DM and HTSD, the distortion they added. It gets worse with louder volume vs distortion that was recorded wouldn't be as obvious. At least to me. But good and solid albums regardless. Just not repeatable for me because of the distortion. (but if you download the guitar hero versions, they're distortion free :) )
@Leathurkatt
2 жыл бұрын
As an audiophile myself, I actually liked the album. Distortion is part of heavy Metal, especially Thrash Metal. I will definitely agree that DM was way more Metallica than anything off of Saint Anger... That one just weirded me out... It sounded like someone threw a bunch of different Metal and hard rock bands into a blender and 🔥 Saint Anger. O.o LIke, WTF is THAT?!? 😖
@mindpurge2270
2 жыл бұрын
@@jberkhimer Totally get it, but I agree with Leathurkatt. I think they clipping and distortion is supposed to be there, it's part of the art of that album. Yeah, if you listen to the album, examining the production, you may feel like it was "just bad recording". But I don't think they purposely botched it, I think they meant for it to do that. These moments where it clips and distorts seem to be where they're inserting power into the artwork, they're shaking the foundation, sorta.

Rick Ruben peaked the mics too hard on this album. I really liked this album but it is almost unlistenable because he wanted a loud aggressive album. He did the same thing with Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight. There's just a frequency in there that ruins both those albums.

Rob’s dad plays flamenco style guitar and taught him. One day while they were sitting around in the studio jamming he busted out some flamenco scales and James and Kirk were blown away. Death Magnetic is their second most recent album and was a return to their thrash roots but with all the skill and sound quality they have developed over the interim since they departed the thrash road for diverse waters. I’d also be willing to bet that the sound they got on this album was what they were going for and failed to achieve on Justice. Certainly if they had followed up Master of Puppets with a refocus on the thrash element rather than continuing the prog-thrash evolution they did with Justice you might have gotten something very similar to Death Magnetic.

This album is very solid. At that point in time this was a fantastic comeback album after releasing st anger. It may not be in the same category as their early records.
