This documentary is exclusively filmed on the Hippos of Masai Mara, Kenya.
Hippos are the integral part of the African ecosystem for millions of years ranging from the Nile river valley to the Cape.
Trophy hunting, Poaching, Retaliatory killings and widespread habitat loss are driving this unique species to the brink of extinction. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the common hippo isn't endangered, but it is vulnerable to extinction. The IUCN estimates that between 115,000 and 130,000 common hippos remain in the wild.
Nearly 5.9 million to 9,000 years ago, India was home to the hippopotamus. These entered Eurasia from Africa, then diversified in South Asia before going extinct. A 2015 study by the "Mammal Review" shows hippos “occasionally” feed on animal carcasses, a more omnivorous behavior. Hippos are known to attack and eat animals like wildebeests, zebras and kudus, as well as other hippos in cases of cannibalism, according to AZ Animals. They also steal meat from other predators.
Hippos are still eaten in the native West Africa, even though poaching and war have decimated the population. Poachers, many of whom are current or ex-militiamen, use rocket launchers, machine guns, and even dynamite to kill the hippos.
