Its funny how HDM gets praise from atheists and hatred from christians... Its the archetypal story of redemptive power of spiritual journey through sacrifice and death against the dogmatic and tyranical side of structured institution. I dont get the atheist side of argument, because Dust is clearly a transcendental eternal entity (existence of which atheism opposes in principle), but I also dont get the christian side, because you could swap Lyra for Jesus and Magisterium for Romans and old Jews and you would have roughly the same story... :D

People get this wrong. This is not an atheist story, it's anti-Christian/dogma but also a very spiritual one. There is the concept of soul and deep intelligent meaning behind the forces of nature. Pullman believes in what he writes, that the universe is "alive" and can communicate with us. That consciousness is a precious thing that exist beyond the human brain, a force of nature that permeates reality. Atheists and agnostics like the story because it portraits the stereotypical god and it's church as impostors and the Christians hate it for this same reason. But the book don't deny the existence of spirits, angels and higher powers, what it does is portrait dogmatic religion as an oportunistic evil robbing humankind of it's true spirituality.
@DarkHound9999
Жыл бұрын
@@folopoideco I dont even think it is is inherently anti christian as well.. You have a lot of biblical references, but the authority could be easily Yahwe or Allah and the story would be exactly the same. Also, its kind of funny that the story of prophet or a prophecy foreshadowing the downfall of an empire is all over pretty much every holy book there is. In every belief system, there is a tension between dogmatic tradition that sustains it (but also tends towards tyranny over time) and experience-based spirituality that is ment to update and rejuvenate the old dogma. So basically, its a variation on the most fundamental religious theme there is. The best mindfuck for me is that the atheistic element would be paradoxically the character of Authority/Metatron, who proclaims himself to be the absolute Truth and then consolidates his claim through power. He is basically Lucifer (associated by Milton with the spirit of rationality - therefore the atheism connection) who discards the infinite potential of the unknown/Dust for a set of fixed dogmas that allegedly were and are always right and every experience outside of them is heresy.

I'm Catholic and I find these stories to be very interesting. The Christians who hate these stories are people who are so insecure in their faith that they can't look at things that challenge what they believe. I personally believe that these stories, though I never read the books, are very useful and that even the most religious people can learn something. I felt the stories were highly spiritual and that Pullman is challenging people to look beyond whatever dogmas they were raised with and see that there is a greater mystery that they don't know. At least that is what I see of it. Not so much, "Stop being religious", but rather "Don't limit your ideas to what you were taught, but have the curiosity to explore what's out there." That's what I got out of it. I didn't alter what I believe, but I do appreciate the notion of questioning authoritarianism that religion has been guilty of for centuries.

Diablo game, yes, but not really LotR. Tolkien was a devout Catholic and called his books "a fundamentally Catholic work". In the lore of his world, there is a being called Eru Illuvatar, or the Allfather, who is functionally God and portrayed as kind of the Supreme good character/hero and also creator of his entire world. The enemy of the trilogy, Sauron, was the lieutenant to Melkor, who was basically the greatest angel who opposed God's plan for creation and rebelled against Him, before eventually being banished to the void. Basically, in His Dark Materials, the "God" figure is the antagonist, and the rebellion against him is good, whereas in LotR, the God figure is the ultimate Protagonist, and the rebellion against Him is evil. LotR is Christian, His Dark Materials is Gnostic

I think it's okay to accept his comments on Tolkien. People are not perfect, and will always have differing opinions. Often times this will mean an author you love will have unexpected ideas you might not like. Sometimes it might go as far as making them irredeemable in your image (I don't mean Pullman here). But that doesn't mean your feelings for their work was invalid. Your experience reading and connecting with their work is still true and very important to you, even if the author themselves turns out to be someone you don't like. That's okay.

His comments on Tolkien are misunderstood. He's saying that LOTR isn't written to deliver a philosophical argument, and that Tolkien never intended it to, whereas CS Lewis' Narnia and Pullman's own books are overtly philosophical/political critique. This is part of the reason that modern literary culture looks on Tolkien's work as 'juvenilia', because it's not really about anything the way intelligent books are, it's just a bunch of made-up fairy tales with no social/cultural/political/philosophical layer.

There are cues in the Bible itself that Yahweh is a false, deceptive god. Genesis 15:7 Yahweh to Abraham: I am Yahweh who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess. Exodus 6:3 Yahweh to Moses: And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as El Shaddai, but by my name Yahweh I was not known to them. Deuteronomy 32:8-9 When the Most High allotted peoples for inheritance, / When He divided up humanity, / He fixed the boundaries for peoples, / According to the number of the divine sons: / For Yahweh's portion is his people, / Jacob His own inheritance. Not without reason, translators obscure the original Hebrew names in these quotes. Archeology discovered that Yahweh used to be a smaller figure, inferior to El, the king of gods. And you know, Satan is just the prosecutor, a "God's" servant, a scapegoat to avoid thinking about vileness of Yahweh.
