Funny how suicide is a bad thing to them considering they kill their mates for a divorce like damn.
@samuelmendoza5986
Ай бұрын
I'm probably overthinking it but I think it's because suicide is to throw away the survival that you and your family all fought so hard to grasp. Meanwhile the divorce thing may be that divorce is frowned on so to make divorce difficult, it must be so bad that you're willing to kill the person you're divorcing. Of course over time people may become desensitized to it and suddenly it's just a barbaric tradition

inferior mates shouldn't be allowed to stay in the genepool, divorce is likely a regulated ritual so if you "divorce" your partner there's going to be people asking questions, then "here's a copy of their work-shifts, there's the dates they skipped, there's the efforts I made to try to reconcile and avoid this outcome". this isn't even "might makes right", this is a case of filtering out the people and personalities that are directly undermining the basic structures that are holding your society together, over successive generations the issue mostly resolves itself the earnest and adaptive survive, the unreliable and outcast filter themselves.

Its more Star trek then any modern star trek adaptation because it keeps the old formula and shows actual love and care for it. It also doesnt takes itself that serious because it knows like the old Star trek Its all a bit silly still it finds the middleway to tackle acute political topics that are currently moving the world and talks about it in metaphors and allogys in a tasteful way wich isnt possible for current Star track. When you cling to traditions with an iron grip, you end up refusing to see other ways. On the other side, when your hand is too loose, you end up losing the significance of what made the tradition stick in the first place; the significance and symbolism that came with it.

The argument that it's tradition and those traditions sustained you during times of hardship doesn't hold up when you're like the Moclans are now: a society that stretches beyond their own planet and has access to miraculous technologies that make you a post-scarcity society, like food synthesizers and replicators.
@ryanalving3785
6 күн бұрын
Arguably that actually makes those traditions all the more important. When societies become too prosperous and don't recognize the hardships that led to their prosperity, there is a tendency to fall apart. Because the values that built it are also the ones you need to keep in order to *maintain* it, and without that your society will eventually decay back into the hardships that were fought so hard to escape.

It’s sci-fi (well written, I might add) but there are cultures here on earth like that. They make living conditions harsh and practically unliveable and they also shame mental health treatments and even punish suicide on the living (which is a war crime btw). An unwinnable scenario
@kaljinx
Ай бұрын
eh not all of it, culture has changed and new rules have been added and old removed across time. It is only when people forget they make the culture and not the other way around and put culture on a unquestionable pedestal does problems arise. It would be wise to make judging the need and validity of their culture a part of their culture as well
