Tonight I shall be chatting with an old friend of mine, who was my first port of call for research on one of my older film projects. No man knows the history of the British 6th Airborne Division better.
NEIL BARBER has been interviewing veterans and studying the actions of the
6th Airborne Division in Normandy for almost 30 years and I am proud to call him a friend. In that time he has written two definitive books, worked as an advisor on both TV, films and documentaries and as a proof reader for other authors writing about the Division.
He is a Committee Member of the 9th Parachute Battalion Reunion Club and a former member of the Merville Battery Museum Committee. Neil was a consultant and historian on my abortive Pegasus Bridge movie. He was also one of the first people to read the finished screenplay, giving me no less than 22 pages of notes, most of which I actioned or incorporated.
For over thirty years, Neil Barber has delved into the exploits of the men of the 6th Airborne Division on D-Day and the subsequent week. This has culminated in various books such as The Day the Devils Dropped In, about the 9th Parachute Battalion's assault on the Merville Gun Battery and fighting at the notorious Chateau St Come a few days later; also, in 2009, there was The Pegasus and Orne Bridges, which has now been updated and expanded for re-publication as simply Pegasus Bridge. There have also been three veteran biographies; Fighting with the Commandos about Trooper Stan Scott, Parachute Doctor about Captain David Tibbs, and Fighting Hitler from Dunkirk to D-Day which describes the experiences of his late uncle, Sergeant Jeff Haward, Middlesex Regiment.
Also over that period Neil has been involved in film and documentary work, vetted books for other writers on the Division and now leads bespoke battlefield tours, purely to the area of the 6th Airborne's actions.
