"Do battles get delayed due to bad weather?" Yeap! D-day was supposed to happen on June 5 but was delayed a day in the hopes that the weather would get better. I don't remember why they decided to push through with June 6th, but I assume it would have something to do with Germans figuring out the real invasion plan before it kicked off.

In order to mount such an offensive, they needed optimal moonlight to navigate over the channel and reach their objectives.. June 5th into June 6th was the optimal time for a full moon during that year. Otherwise they would have to put it off until the next opportune time. He would go from place to place just dropping off letters, packages, or other items. My grandma told me that he fell in love with the views and mountain and would describe them in letters to her. He wanted to keep the motorcycle but couldn't find a way to transport it back to Iowa. It's funny to cause when I was 19 I worked as a bike courier. I guess it runs in the family.

"As we came down the ramp, we were in water about knee high, and we started to do what we were trained to do - moved forward, and then crouch and fire. One of the problems was we didn't quite know what to fire at. I saw some tracers coming from a concrete emplacement, which to me looked mammoth. I never anticipated any gun emplacements being that big. I attempted to fire back at that, but I had no concept of what was going on behind me. There was not much to see in front of me except a few houses, and the water kept coming in so rapidly, and the fellows I was with were being hit and put out of action so quickly that it become a struggle to stay on one's feet. I abandoned my equipment, which was very heavy. I floundered in the water and had my hand up in the air, trying to get my balance, when I was first shot. I was shot through the left hand, which broke a knuckle, and then through the palm of the hand. I felt nothing but a little sting at the time, but I was aware that I was shot. Next to me in the water, Private Henry G. Witt was rolling over towards me. "Sergeant, they're leaving us here to die just like rats." I certainly wasn't thinking the same thing, nor did I share that opinion. I didn't know whether we were being left or not. I made my way forward as best I could. My rifle jammed, so I picked up a carbine and got off a couple of rounds. We were shooting at something that seemed inconsequential. There was no way I was going to knock out a German concrete emplacement with a .30-caliber rifle. I was hit again, once in the left thigh, which broke my hipbone and a couple of times in my pack, and then a bullet severed my chin strap on my helmet. I worked my way up onto the beach, and staggered up against a wall, and collapsed there. The bodies of the other guys washed ashore, and I was one live body amongst many of my friends who were dead and, in many cases, blown to pieces. uhhhh not a very pleasant way to spend a day. I don't recall for, at least for a while an further troops coming in, essentially my part of the invasion had ended having being wiped out as most of the company was. Ive wondered over the years , about one thing... that is Ive wondered off and on intermittently and that is why, we... A Company, 1st battalion ,116th Infantry, 29 division was chosen to be the American equivalent to storm troopers.... was it because were so highly trained?.. I guess we were. but there really no points of reference... uhh was it because we had such potential? actually we had no combat duty and there were other troops around who were with us on invasion.... the first division who were highly trained or was it because were simply expendable? i ...i.. Ive just never come across to the answer to that.... " - Sergeant Thomas Valance, age 23, A Company, 116th Infantry, Omaha Beach, Normandy, France, June 6th, 1944

I can answer the "Why they did not re-schedule it?" - Because they already had. I think they planned the attack to be on somewhere between 2-4 June, but the weather was so bad they had to delay. The diversion tactic to attack to Calais was working and the timing was crucial that if they delayed again, suspicion would occur and German can defend Omaha better. Just right on 6 June the weather was cleared enough so... Everything else is history
@justinlawyer4428

To answer the question there asking as far as rescheduling the d-day invasion earlier in the days of the African campaign Eisenhower did exactly that because is was raining and because of the rain the mud made it impossible for the heavy armor and trucks to move and the next couple of days they found out that the delay forced by the weather helped the Germans get enough time to reinforce their flank thus preventing the allies from ending that part of the conflict sooner and he never forgot that fateful decision and the consequences in casualties and resources used in this operation

@agermangoose4797

08:05 Yes the M2 Flamethrowers would have likely worked even after the beach landing mainly because of two things: 1. The valve which releases the pressurised gasoline/napalm was at the front of the firing tube meaning that water wouldn't be able to stay inside the tube and cause malfunctions. 2. The ignition of the gasoline works with what are essentially miniturized road flares which are sealed with wax. The operator depressed the front trigger which sets of one of the flares and rotates the flare cylinder lining up the next flare with the striker allowing the operator to use small bursts some time apart instead if having to dump all of his fuel immediately. As to how much fuel you needed: Two two gallon tanks and one pressurized nitrogen tank allowing the M2 to be continuously fired for 6-8 seconds. Sidenote: So you're gonna have historians talk about D-Day without mentioning the huge misinformation campaign which led the Germans to believe that the allies were going to land on a completely different beach which lead to the actual beaches being 'mildly' fortified

The flamethrower should still work because they used a kind of fuse in the nozzle that would ignite rather than something like an electrical starter. They were reloadable fuses a well so if a charge got wrecked somehow you could still easily switch it out. the gas they used for it was also under pressure hence water-tight

Actually there was a hidden German bunker up on the cliffs which the US hit during d-day. It was technically classified as a training camp but it rained artillery fire from the east so we had to take it out. This actually depicted it fairly accurately. We did blow the artillery cannons with thermite and explosives leaving them twisted hunks of metal. We also had to either shoot the enemy down or take them prisoner it didn’t matter to us as long as we did our job. The entire structure was uncovered about a year ago by josh gates and a ww2 historian in what was thought to be empty grass. The entire structure was buried by the French government after the war to attempt to destroy the past which we found. Artifacts included a few rare SS pieces which shows how important the site was. We’re still trying to fully excavate the site for more clues but it’s getting there. We also used the footage from every amphibious landing as training footage for the next class of soldiers. The d-day landing footage was used in training thousands with the pacific island hopping campaign with what to do and how to do it. It also helped with training battlefield medics a bit easier with response times and the triage system. Although some d-day footage is still considered classified for some reason and it still hasn’t been released at all. Likely something in it bugs certain people or something else is in there that we don’t know about.

My great grandfather fought in this battle. A famous baseball player Yogi (Lawerence) Berra was in this battle too.
