Founded in 1866, Best’s Great Western Vineyard is among Australia’s oldest vineyards. It’s also among the world’s most famous. The reason being is that Best’s has the oldest known shiraz, pinot meunier and pinot noir vines in the world still producing grapes. After World War II, some French vineyards replaced destroyed vines with those acquired from Best’s.
Three years ago, fifth generation winemaker and managing director of Best’s, Ben Thomson, began questioning how the family’s vineyards were sprayed. He asked this question:
"Why do we spray a vine with 6 leaves exactly the same way we spray a vine with 600 leaves?”
Great question and ultimately led him to the Smart Apply Intelligent Spray Control System, a technology that uses LiDAR to spray individual vines and trees based on size and foliage density. Ben took a great leap of faith and installed a Smart Apply System to his sprayer and did a field trial. So impressed with the savings on water and chemicals, he started using Smart Apply on every spray. That was three years ago and Ben still uses Smart Apply’s precision spray and data system and as he says, he has “no disease in his vineyards and no regrets.”
