When I was six years old my family lived in Mosier, Oregon. Our house was right on the Columbia Gorge Highway, old U.S. Route 30, as it began its ascent on the west side of Mosier up toward the Twin Tunnels. At that time it was a dead end, as the tunnels were blocked and closed. That was in 1958. I have twice traveled back on Amtrak to visit the area in the early 1980's, and at that time to tunnels were still impassible. It is still the most beautiful area that I have ever experienced in this country.

I lived in the Columbia River Gorge for 5 years. I loved EVERY minute of it. The only reason I moved away was cuz I got divorced. My ex owned the house we lived in so I had to move away. But I still miss it. It's not only a great place to live but also an awesome place to visit. If you're looking for a great vacation spot then I highly recommend the Gorge. The best towns are Corbett, Cascade Locks & Hood River.

I prefer the high-plain desert areas like The Dalles or Mosier.
