Sedalia- arguably the birthplace of ragtime
Ohio Ave. in Sedalia is a good example of the 20th-century Midwest "Main Street USA"
Learn about the history of a few of the currently remaining historic buildings on a couple of the oldest and most notorious streets in Downtown Sedalia, Missouri.
Growing rapidly after the Civil War, in the late 19th Century Sedalia was posed to become a city of both beauty and progress, hitting all of the major historical notes of the time, however, it was also heavily laden with much vice, lawlessness, and corruption.
The city had a few hits and misses over the course of the past 160 years from a development standpoint, and ultimately took a backseat to other regional centers in the state.
Today, Sedalia is a more rural city center and has quieted down a great deal compared to some of the events of its past history.
Side note *Bothwell Hotel is not "fireproof" - no building is fireproof. It is -fire resistant.
