Yeah, it's one of the ones my father prefers... I prefer the simpler milk/sugar pie...which is a 4 cups milk (I tend to split that into 3 of milk and 1 of cream), 2 cups of sugar (or substitute), and 1 cup of flour...then add a bit of nutmeg and/or cinnamon...then sprinkle a bit more sugar on top when it is almost done cooking if you use the substitute and put it back in to get some color on the top.

I wish I had some of Melissa’s willpower but when it comes to sweets I don’t have any willpower! These favorite pies are not in an order of preference: lemon meringue, Patty’s sawdust pie with the sliced bananas and whipped cream on top, pecan pie and coconut cream pie! You can bet I’m going to try your transparent pie recipe. I get being excited about seeing your grand dog. Four of our six grandchildren live three and a half hours away. My Mom was an AWESOME BAKER/COOK!!! She made this same pie which I knew as Chess pie. As for my favorite pie growing up was definitely her pecan pie. It was not so unbearably sweet like most pecan pies you buy in the stores, it was just the right amount of sweet and salty and it was amazing. My Mom live to be 93 . She was known at both Churches we attended for her baking/cooking as well as the railroad where my Dad worked and when he retired after 38 years they threw a retirement party for both him and my Mom. You see where he worked there wasn't a lot of places to eat so my Mom didn't want him or anyone else to go hungry so she sent him to work with a gallon jar of homemade cookies or sometime a cake to work with him the entire 38 yrs he worked there. So they at least had something with there coffee if nothing else. Of course they did tell her they were going to miss her the most. At Christmas she always gave cakes and/ or candy as gifts. She gifted girls from her Sunday School class their wedding receptions with the works, not only the brides cake but the groom's cake, cheese rings, mints, and even the punch as their wedding gift. All made from scratch!! Of course she did the same for her children, Grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She did Wednesday night meals at our church until her knees wouldn't hold her up. The lake community we live she always donated cakes for all their functions and she even played Mrs Santa Claus at the children's Christmas party. I guess that's enough bragging about my Mom!! A funny thing though I might add was she always used margarine and never butter so one day I asked her why she hated butter so much and her reply was she always had to churn the butter growing up which turned her against butter. I was Blessed to have such amazing Christian Parents growing up. When I get started talking about them especially my Mom's baking/cooking I think is really hard to stop. I know this may sound like it was only about my Mom but my Dad was right there along side of my Mom and she was the first to tell you she couldn't have done any of these things without my Dad. Thanking you for letting me share my parents with you, even though it was a lot more than you ask for. Thank you also for sharing your recipes and time with all of us and for welcoming us to come and "Sit At Your Table". I hope you and your family will not only enjoy that pie but will also have a safe, Blessed, wonderful weekend as well as a wonderful upcoming week. Stay Healthy and God Bless You All 💜 Sorry I didn't mean to write a short story instead of a simple comment!!!

Coconut cream pie. My great-aunt taught me how to make one when I was very young but many of my handed-down recipes were lost in a water pipe break in my townhouse years ago. I could use a good one with a lot of shredded coconut in a custard and meringue on top like hers. I look forward to seeing how this differs from my chess pie in flavor.

Just wanted to say I love your channel. I live in north Florida on the gulf coast and we call it chess pie. And I do love it. Haven’t made it in a long time. I think I might do that today. But my favorite thing that you said in the whole video is, I mainly go to my daughter and son-in-law‘s house to see my grand dog!!! I’m 65 and I have been in dachshund rescue my whole life. So anybody that loves dogs is definitely OK in my book. Thanks for the videos.

Good afternoon Melissa and Tom, Thank you for this recipe. It looks great. I absolutely love sweet potato pie. It is shameful, but at one time, I ate a whole sweet potato pie for dinner. I had a friend, who made the best sweet potato pie, and when we had a Thanksgiving office luncheon at the office, she would make me a whole pie for myself. Ms. Ruth is a wonderful lady in the Lord. Again, thanks for sharing.

YES! Chili was video #1 for us. We've learned a lot since then but we (especially me, the videographer) have so much more to learn. I apologize for any bad video shots. I'm trying hard to improve with every recipe. We are so glad to have you from Alaska. We visited there a few years ago and it's one of the most beautiful places we've ever been to. Thank you again for watching. We are so happy to have you at the table!

Comments like yours makes up for the few hateful ones that we occasionally get. You’re so sweet and kind. Thank you for making our day! You can find a pie shield at Walmart or order through Amazon. Just make sure that you order a shield for the diameter of your pie plate . They do come in many sizes. Tom does use it for every pie he makes. It will protect the crust from burning.

Hi Tom and Melissa, I’m a fairly new subscriber in California! I have been enjoying your videos and made an attempt at southern greens beans. Epic fail due to a bit too much salt.. I am not giving up and will try them again! I am also going to try your delicious looking Transparent Pie along with several others ( that chocolate cake is also at the top of my list). If I had to pick a favorite pie, it would be boysenberry! Cheers and thanks for the wonderful videos and great tips that you provide!

Tom, my grandmother and mother hailed from the foothills. Outside of Greenville. They passed down the "corn meal pie" recipe to me. Same staples (butter sugar eggs milk) but has flour corn meal and vinegar. The ingredients are brought to a boil in a saucepan before being poured into pie shell and being baked till upper crusting splits! It tastes and is colored much like pecan pie without pecans...lol. Very very decadent!

No, it was not grainy at all. You need to mix it until the sugar has pretty much dissolved so it’s not grainy and the sugar will dissolve as it’s baking.
